What's your work /life balance like? Do you feel like you get enough free time? Either during work shifts, or outside work?

Or do you feel like your life is just work /home chores/sleep /work /home chores/sleep?

Or do you want to work a little bit more, like you feel you should be doing a few more hours?

When you go back to work on Monday or whatever the start of your week is, do you feel that you had a break to refresh yourself? Or not so much?

I think it needs to fluctuate in order to not hinder your progress.

For example there will be times in my job that I realise I am needed that little bit more so I prepare for the fact that I will not be at home as much during that time but realise the company needs me a little bit more.

This also applies when it's for my benefit to work more for example if I am looking for a bit of extra cash I'll do some overtime before a holiday ect.

Also my job realise that while I am prepared to do the above I also have expectations on them in that there will be particular times that I am needed at home for example if my kids have an upcoming show/play I will cut back the hours a little in order to be there to help them prepare and be supportive as I refuse to not play a part in aspects like that of their childhood because of work.

I think it has to be reasonable and both the company and the employee have to be prepared to step in and help when the other one needs it.

Mine is decent at the moment in relative terms but I’m trying to be in a position where I’m the boss and able to access significantly more free time. Life is too short to let it pass while trying to fit everything in at the weekend and on a few weeks holiday per year.

The amount of work I do, I could probably fit into 2 days but instead, I am stuck here for 5 days a week. It feels like wasted time.

Then tell this to your boss you are willing to take on more work--------for a nice pay raise to boot. I'd go nuts with that little work and having to be idle, or acting busy the majority of the time.

I'm idle as hell for most of my shift, and I love it. I read my kindle, browse the Internet and draw pictures, then I go home and pay my rent. Great.

Hell no, I'm constantly working. I do 50-60 hours a week at my regular job, then work at the dance studio 3-4 times a week, plus gotta help the kids with homework, regular husband duties, then my DJ gigs. I don't have any chill, relaxation time. I'm on that constant hustle.

I have a good balance I think.

When we are busy in work, I will put in the extra hours without whining if and when I feel it warranted.

If I am having a quiet day or week, I'll go home or work from home if there isn't much to do. If I have a meeting on other side of town that wraps at say 1pm, I go home if it's nearer or I'm not busy.

Nobody questions me and my approach , as they get results and I've never massively fucked up or missed important deadlines or don't take the absolute piss.

Put it this way, my company has a charge rate for my services on any sort of project. It's usually around 110 euro/hr. I typically work 37 hrs a week. Let's say I charge about 30 of those hours to projects, that's about €3300 the company is charging off my work. I get about a 3rd of that.

I have almost no balance. Working 50-60 hours a week on the night shift doesn't allow for much. That will be changing soon, though. One way or the other.

I do 40hours a week nowadays so just normal full-time, feels more though cause I'm the only one at my job that does that so everyday I start the earliest shift and just watch everyone go home one by one.

It's not so much the hours themselves that I feel are too much it's that I have to get up so disgustingly early almost every day, being a natural nightperson that can't really ever fall asleep early so instead I end up sleeping too little.

Ive gone out of my way over the past few years to restructure my work habits and gain more free time and flexibility.............shifting my focus to service work and troubleshooting has significantly lowered my stress levels and allowed me the time to work on my place out here in the swamp............

I see no reason to return to the 60+ hour a week shit where I was responsible for everything from ordering to hiring while also being onsite forman for projects across central florida.................now everything is in county, when I schedule it more or less and I can keep it between 35-45 hours a week no problems.............and Im happier to say the least......

The 5 day week is a fuckin farce, man.

I'm not happy with my work life balance at all but there fuck all I can do about it

I work from just before 8 until about 4, just after. I always take at least a 30 min it's walk at lunch as I'm lunch to work in a beautiful city, minutes from the beach/water. I guess I'm lucky in that I can flex my hours however I see fit and I work from home every Wednesday to break up the week but it doesn't come close to compensating for the fact that 5 out of 7 days are committed to something I take zero enjoyment from.

It's a little better now because I was doing a graduate program in Physical Therapy and between that, work, home life....it was organized chaos to say the last, it was KILLING ME. I enjoyed the process but am so relieved for it to be over.

I'll have more in the way of free time, yes.

Truthfully, 99% of us have no real work-life balance. If we did, we would be working 3, maybe 4 days a week at most, of no more than 30 hrs. That would be a true work-life balance.

And in reality very few people work more than 30 hours a week anyway.

I guess you could argue that if we reduced the working week to 30 hours no one would then work 30 hours as it's just not human nature to go balls to wall 100% but the current monday-friday is demonstrably inefficient.

I didn't factor in commute either, btw. I'm up at 0615 to leave the house at 0700 and I get home around 1715 and go to bed around 2130. That's barely 4 hours a day to myself and it's the shittest part of the day (dark, less access to amenities, at the end of my circadian cycle) and need to include feeding and exercise as mandatory. What the fuck is left after that? It's no fuckin' life at all, man.

I would like a 4 day week at my current job, but that's never gonna happen given the roster. But it should. I feel like a much better worker after a 3 day weekend.

By any reasonable, full time employee standard, I do fairly ok. I probably work about 35 hours a week on average, which really isn't much. My commute is a 20 minute walk too, so I don't have much to complain about.

Ideally though, I wouldn't work at all and they would continue to pay me.
