I'd like to pay my respects to one of the most majestic champions of all time. If you must discuss his life outside the ring then so be it, but that's not what I'm making this thread for.

Whoever's underrating him is a moron mate!

Not the most technically skilled boxer of all time, but easily one of the greatest ring generals of all time. The way he controlled bouts by dictating the pace was pretty mesmerizing to watch.

Great choice of vid BA, I'm gunna give that a whirl now.

Could only do one thing; but did it brilliantly. Once he got his timing down he was unshiftable. Once he got his jab on you, the right was following. And once that connected, it could be a very painful night for his opponent. Dominant champ' in a good era.

For me Monzon is the greatest Middleweights of all time and one of very few true divisional champions.

One of my favorite fighters of all time, the sadistic way in which he systematically deconstructed his opponents whilst always remaining in control and not loosing his composure is what makes him such a cool cat.

i love monzon, its always nice to see aggressive distance fighters that generate power with their feet and punch properly. a lot of people obsess over slickster defense guys and overlook these types

Nice video Teeto, hadn't seen much of Monzon before. Love the he just slighty leans back then leads with the right hand.

Who was the bold geezer who nearly had him out at the 4 minute mark

That's Bennie Briscoe, one of the best middleweights of the era, a really fine fighter who used to come forward and put his power punches together really well. He gave Monzon a fine fight. You should see his fight with Rodrigo Valdez lad. Valdez actually stopped him with a fine ko at about 1:30 of this vid, check it brother

I remember when that picture of Monzon being all staggered was circulating on ESB Classic (when it was good there, long time ago now) and everyone was like 'shit, what's this? Which fight is that from?', because you didn't see that often, and then the guy who made the vid I posted here must have made it with that in mind because when you see him get staggered, the video switches to that pic, and then the video surfaced and got posted on ESB and cleared it up for us.

It is a great pic too

actually, I'm just looking at this pic now and thinking wtf, how did we not know it was from the Briscoe fight? Briscoe is right there. Maybe I recall it wrong.

haha,

check and hook go together pretty nicely it seems ;)
:yep

Just checking out his record on boxrec, any reason why, after beating Jose Napolese he refused to fight Rodrigo Valdez but fought his 2 years later:think And whats with all the fights in Monaco, was it a popular fighting destination back then, like Vegas now??

Hoooooooold on. A Monzon thread? I need to have a sleep and decide whether or not to counter this with a Hagler thread.
well I wouldn;t consider it a counter, but I'd welcome it as a celebration of Marvin Hagler, one of the finest fighters of all time

make the thread!

Unsure about what happened with the politics regarding the Valdez fight. I'm also unsure about the politics involving Monaco, I'm sure one of the lads will know however, maybe Swarmer.
