New WBC featherweight champion Abner Mares (26-0-1, 14KOs) is strongly hinting that silver champion, number one contender and fellow Mexican Robinson Castellanos (18-9, 11KOs) could very well be his next opponent. Abner was at hand in Mexico City to be presented with the green and gold belt, by WBC President Jose Sulaiman. And Abner suggested:

"I don't have a preference. But I do realize that Robinson is the challenger and that he's earned his spot. He went all the way to Panama and was successful, and I think he deserves his chance for the title. Robinson is the guy who deserves the opportunity."

Abner who's also said he want his first defense to be on home turf in Guadalajara, or in Mexico City.

Guillermo Rigondeaux who's WBA and WBO world champion at super bantamweight defeated Abner as an amateur. He's recently said he'd like to repeat the dose in the pro ring. Grinning and not in the least nettled, Abner dubbed Rigondeaux a defensive fighter.

He added: "I wouldn't mind fighting him, as he's been running his mouth. But he doesn't want to move up to 126 pounds. And…all my eyes are on who's at featherweight.

Abner said he'd also consider going for a fourth title at super feather commenting: "If my body lets me move up and I feel strong I'll most definitely try. Why not!

"It's a risk but boxing is a risk and I'll try my luck. I'm capable of going up to super featherweight because of my skills."

Plenty of good fights for rigo at 122 just now. Would love to see the Mares fight but there's no point in him dropping his two belts for it. Then again, I don't think Rigo really cares about the belts. He wasn't very happy with paying sanctioning fee's to them if I remember correct.

Castellanos is a true Cinderella man. Started his career 5-8, including a stoppage loss to Mikey Garcia, since then he gone 13-1 including victories over the then unbeaten pair of Alejandro Sanabria and Christopher Perez as well as Celestino Caballero.

Certainly a "deserving" challenger.

Since when did Rigo rule out moving up? He wasn't prepared to do so when Gamboa was at the weight, but that was it. All Rigo cares about is getting paid cash money, son; belts don't mean shit to him, and he'd fight at 126 if need be. Besides, it was only the other week Mares claimed he'd move back down to 122 for it.

Fight won't happen due to the the cold war. It it did Rigo would win 10 times out of 10.

I think it would be a tough fight for both men.

Seen his fight with Caballero but didn't know about his career turnaround. Further proof that you can't judge a fighter solely on his record.

Also worth noting that his 1 recent loss was a 10 round split decision loss to Sergio Villanueva and that was back in 2010.

Boxrec rate Castellanos #5 whilst Ring have him unranked.

I'd go with fringe top 10 in all honesty but he certainly deserving of a shot having held the WBC Silver title for 2 years now.

I had to Boxrec it when I saw the name and when you see the 18-9 record, the first impression is that it's a soft opponent. But then you look at the way he's turned his career around, the run of wins he's currently on against a number of prospects and contenders and the fact that he got his ranking by beating an albeit past it Caballero (who I've never rated that highly) on away soil, and I wouldn't begrudge this fight happening at all. It's an incredible turnaround and he really does merit his shot if he gets it so good luck to him.

Still, I'd prefer Mares to drop back to 122 and take on Rigo. This fight could wait for afterwards

You've got to admire fighters that turn their career around like that in this day and age of an early loss "exposing" you etc. (I know a loss can expose flaws but you know what I mean.)
