BoxingScene.com recently caught up with former WBO interim junior middleweight champion Alfredo "El Perro" Angulo (22-2). El Perro has been mentioned as a possible opponent for Saul "Canelo" Alvarez's May 4th return at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. I asked Angulo if he felt he would be chosen for the high profile fight.
"That is a rumor that has been out there for a long time. I have heard that rumor for two years now. Of course I would like that fight. I will fight anybody but I don't think that fight is going to happen. I leave that (choosing opponents) up to Oscar (De La Hoya). There are a lot of good fighters in my division and good fights that can happen," Angulo replied.
The Mexicali, Mexico native also said that he plans on returning to the ring this spring and said that a rematch against James Kirkland isn't out of the question. Angulo knocked Kirkland down and almost had him knocked out in the first round of their November 2011 fight. Kirkland regrouped and Angulo ended up punching himself out and was stopped in the 6th round of a very exciting fight.
"I have no problem facing Kirkland again. Like I said I leave that up to Oscar. If he says 'you should fight Kirkland again' then let's do it. I don't say no to anyone," Angulo stated.
"I have been training and working very hard with Virgil Hunter. We were told that my next fight will probably be in March or April," he continued.
