Arroyo vs. Jaro Showdown in Doubt Over Weight Limit?
Posted by: Ronnie Nathanielsz on 1/8/2013 .
It was announced on Monday that former WBC flyweight champion Sonny Boy Jaro would see action at the Ruben Rodriguez Coliseum in Bayamon, Puerto Rico on February 2. 30 year old Sonny Boy Jaro, who has a record of 34-11-5 with 24 knockouts, was said to be facing 27 year old Puerto Rican McWilliams Arroyo, the reigning WBO Latino flyweight champion in a title fight. Arroyo has a record of 13-1 with 11 knockouts.
The fight card will be presented by PR Best Boxing Promotions in association with Top Rank.
Late word states that Sonny Boy Jaro's manager Aloe Jaro won't allow his boxer to fight because of the proximity of the bout and the fact that he would have problems making the 112 pound limit. Jaro may reconsider should the weight be 115 pounds.
Jaro won the WBC flyweight crown with a stunning 6th round TKO over longtime champion and WBC "Fighter of the Decade" Pongsaklek Wonjongkam on March 2, 2012 but lost the title by a split decision to Japan's Toshiyuki Igarashi on July 16, 2012.
Arroyo won the Latino title with a ten round unanimous decision over Luis Maldonado of Mexico on March 10, 2012. Maldonado is the same fighter who lost by an 8th round TKO in an IBF/IBO flyweight title fight against Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire on December 1, 2007.
Arroyo who is ranked No. 6 by the WBO is coming off a 5th round TKO over Ronald Ramos in a title defense last September 27.
The main event will feature former world featherweight champion Juanma Lopez (31-2, 28 KOs) against Aldimar Silva Santos (18-3, 9 KOs), from Brazil, in a fight scheduled for 10 rounds at 128 pounds. Lopez is ranked No. 5 by the WBO.
