Assuming that his Middleweight belt is Vacated, that leaves Felix Sturm and Martin Murray as the #1 and #2 for the vacant belt.

Is this move up in weight a permanent decision by GGG, or just a one off thing? I think there's far more opportunities at middleweight in the long term for him, what with the number of good young contender's and champions, who aren't quite big names yet. At 168, there's still a fairly sizable depth of quality fighter's, but the problem is that most of em are far bigger names than GGG, and are unlikely to run the risk of fighting him, unless they absolutely have to. In any case, in spite of his power, Gennady is a fairly small 160 pounder, and I can't see him being as effective at an even higher weight.

I think this fights going to be entertaining all the same, and from what ive seen of Oost, his style's made to order for Golvokin. Can only see a KO win for the Kazakh powerhouse.

It's odd that this same announcement elsewhere got rave reviews, to the contrary. I'm pretty proud of triple-G going for a move like this. A lot of fighters say things like "I'll take anyone from where to whatever" but they don't actually bother. Golovkin's a guy who says he can make 154 alright going up to 168 for a top ten man. Actually, a top five man. That's a serious move to go after real, legit respect.

does anyone know why Oosthuizen turned Froch down but has gone for Golovkin? will GGG generate more money?

Not sure if it's more money but headlining on HBO is certainly a much bigger platform for him.
ye good point, i like him but think GGG has enough to take this even with size disadvantages

A proposed move up to 168lbs for middleweight king Gennady Golovkin may not materialize after all as potential opponent Thomas Oosthuizen's manager Rodney Berman recently told WBN that negotiations have hit a snag.

Kazakhstan's Golovkin, 30, holds two world titles at 160lbs, cementing his position recently with a fifth round stoppage win over EBU belt holder Grzegorz Proksa, and sounded out IBO champion Oosthiuzen as a port of call for his first move up to the weight divisions.

Golden Gloves boss Berman says that things are far from complete for a January bout though, and is holding negotiations with other possible suitors for what would be the South African's seventh world title defence.

"The bout is still under negotiation," Berman told World Boxing News. "It will be great for the game if it is finalised. From Oosthuizen's point of view, he would have no problem taking the fight and would welcome beating Golovkin.

"Tommy knows his chance to prove his incredible talent (against the best) will be coming soon, be it against Golovkin or another fighter.

"I think at the moment, the election and floods are delaying matters, but if the fight doesn't happen, I have other plans in place for Tommy anyway."

24 year-old Oosthiuzen has an impending title defence against Fulgencio Zuniga to deal with before Golovkin can even be contemplated and needs to impress on Saturday night in Gauteng to keep big fight dreams alive.
