Dubbed 'The Machine', Argentina's Lucas Matthysse sent out a statement of intent last night with a three round destruction of the usually durable IBF world titlist Lamont Peterson. After a cagey fist round whereby Peterson opted to box from range, Matthysse closed the gap in the second and dropped Peterson with a right to the body followed by a glancing left hook.

Peterson saw out the round but again found himself on the canvas in the third after a beautiful short left hook landed directly on his chin and had him struggling to rise. After being felled again seconds later, again from a glancing left hook referee Steve Smoger stepped inside to end the carnage and a new star was born.

The result has Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Shaefer excitingly labeling the Argentinian 'the new Manny Pacquaio' as his 140lb rivals Danny Garcia and Amir Khan watched on from ringside.

With an unofficial tournament by GBP supposedly resulting in a Matthysse v Garcia fight in September, fight fans are salivating from the lips as to numerous potential fights 'The Machine' could be involved in in the near future.

Great article mate. Thanks for this.

There's a ton of options out there. Not all can be made as you say because of the promotional differences but it's a great weight range. 140/147 right now is easily my favourite scene in boxing. So many top quality names and different skillsets.

I'd like to see the Garcia fight next because that was the original plan and it's a natural fight to find the real king at 140. Then maybe Mayweather and if (a big if of course) Lucas can come through that then the remainder of these fights should fall into place.

Good article man. I think he should target some of the names you mentioned at 140. Wins overGarcia and Khan would make his stock go through the roof and the demand for a mayweather fight would be very high and a fight he should go for, earn a payday and then if he loses, it doesn't matter because it's mayweather he can still beat some big names at 147 or drop back to 140. If he wins, well he's done it really.

Great article @chatty

However (and I'll qualify this by saying I'm a massive Lucas fan boy and have been since I first saw him) I actually think you've underrated him a touch against Pac and PBF, I think Matthysse wins those bouts :deal I think maybe he could do with another couple of fights at world level like he is doing, but I think he's one of the best counterpunchers in the game, has a great control of range an makes people move where he wants, great head movement, whilst being a great combination puncher on the inside with devastating power. All of these things add up for quite a conundrum, and Matthysse has proved he can track down and land on two quality "slick" boxers in Judah and Alexander so Mayweather may not be untouchable there.

Good article chatty. To be honest I think Floyd schools him with his eyes closed but the Garcia fight would be a good 'un and it seems likeliest.
see I think Floyd has real problems with what Matthysse brings (see above) plus i reckon this fight gets made but it will probably be a while, and the longer they wait the more Floyd declines

Good article. Matthysse vs Garcia is definitely the best fight that can be made at 140 and I give the edge to Lucas. Garcia can and will connect and i think it will give us a better idea of the chin Lucas has, but I still think the ref or Danny's dad stops the fight around the 10th. If that comes to fruition, Khan is absolutely fucked since he is supposed to take on the winner. He has the heart to get in there with The Machine, but that would probably end his career and in brutal fashion.

Ether way, winner of this fight gets Mayweather next May and I would have no issue with that.

Garcia looked shook last night. Matthysse does a job on him in 6 rounds.
exactly what i thought lol he had the 'oh schitt ive gotta fight this dude' face haha

amir khan would stand a chance the second he tried to trade...

i think high profile fights against the likes of garcia and khan and them to raise profile first, then hopefully he comes thru them and fights mayweather... out of all the fighters in and around the division i think he gives mayweather the most trouble and posses the danger of ko'in him... he can box, but come forward fighters give mayweather the most trouble...

but then mayweather wants to fight in the uk (presumably with a british fighter) so would he want khan to pick up another loss before he fought him??? so he may want to fight him before matthysse gets to him...

Matthysse hasn't truly lost a fight and has an 86% KO ratio. A higher ratio than Wladimir Klitschko. Matthysse is p4p the hardest puncher in boxing at the moment and with power like that I'd give him a shot at beating anyone from 140/147. I'd give him a shot at beating Mayweather if he can just touch that chin but to be honest even at this late stage in Mayweather's career he really only has a punchers chance.

I want to see him face Garcia. Garcia will get knocked out though if he allows Matthysse to land as easily as Khan and Judah landed.
The Khan fight I feel is unnecessary for Khan to take with his chin. Maybe towards the end of his career as a nice paycheck. Khan can UD Matthysse but that is if I pretend that Khan's chin isn't suspect.
Alvarado will be stopped by TKO to the body.
Pacquiao will absolutely maul Matthysse, same with Mayweather.
Bradley will fight a slick fight against Matthysse. Either UD Bradley or RTD win for Matthysse as Bradley can't take anymore punishment after the 10th round (if Bradley fights fire with fire, which clearly didn't work against Provodnikov).
I will like to see Matthysse-Judah 2, Matthysse will stop Judah this time.
Matthysse is not as good at fighting on the inside as Bradley, inside-fighting is Alexander's nemesis. With Matthysse going hard for the KO, I think Alexander could be too slick on the outside, nevertheless, I am 100% sure that Matthysse won their fight 95-94 a few years ago.
Broner vs Matthysse is one any fan will want to see. I just cannot tell how that will go tbh in a few years.
