Apparently Team Avanesyan have now formally asked the WBO to 'no decision' the fight following glovegate (according to a Frank Warren interview I just watched).
I watched the fight live but the KO came at 05:08 UK time and I was falling in and out of sleep during the fight trying to maintain a scorecard which after round 2 I realised was going to be impossible due to my constant drifting off so I did go back and rewatch it all a few days later and my take is the referee and commission really messed this up. Avanesyan was going to lose anyway but the decision to allow the fight to enter a new round with the gloves hanging off the champion's fists was wholly unacceptable and now it's given Avanesyan reasonable grounds to make this complaint.
It's an entirely legitimate complaint how can the fight go on with the gloves in that state? It can't, the champion should have been ordered to replace his gloves at once when Lee saw the state they were in. I get that would have taken a while but if the safety of the fighters is the top concern and also fairness then it's a no-brainer.
Crawford could well suffer the first blemish on his record, I don't know when the WBO will make a ruling but if it were up to me I'd be ruling in favour of Team Avanesyan, I can't see any good reason for rejecting his plea. I'm surprised Crawford didn't insist on changing his gloves also, why would you be happy to beat on your opponent when the gloves are falling apart? It's a sport at the end of the day not a car park dispute.
