The Nevada State Athletic Commission has suspended Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. for nine months and fined him $900,000 for testing positive for marijuana after his fight with Sergio Martinez in September. The commission members grilled Chavez, who was speaking by telephone from Mexico due to visa problems, before deciding on the punishment. The suspension is retroactive to September, when he fought Martinez, so Junior is out until June 15. The fine is 30% of his $3 million purse. He must also test clean before his next fight.

"He must also test clean before his next fight." Well, yeah, that's the idea.

everyone could've known how this was going down. not really a suspension for him. he'll probably fight in the summer. so he's in the mix. really damage done to his career, he just better not mess up again...

 am I the only one that agrees with this?

At the end of the day, he is a professionally athlete who shouldn't be taking this stuff a month before the biggest fight of his career. It is 100% cheating too. While he may not be gaining an advantage per say, he has cheated the fans who bought ringside tickets and paid top dollar for the PPV. He isn't training to the 100% of his ability, something which Roach did he bollock about. Instead, he just thought fuck it and got high.

It is also the second time he has failed a drugs test, and the punishment is rightfully more extensive.

I honestly don't understand the logic. Boxing fans call for a lifetime ban on fighters who test positive for PEDs, but don't want them 'fined too munch' should they take an illegal substance. Its illogical.

This.

By definition, you really need to be gaining something which could be perceived as an unfair advantage to "cheat". I don't know about the rest of you, but the fact that I'm shitter at just about everything in my life right now(apart from being a swagged mufugga who spills nothin' but trill of course, though many of you heathens probably don't hold such aspects of life at the high standards I do) than I used to be is evidence enough for me that marijuana doesn't offer such perks.
