Due to the spectacular knockout the other night its only natural to ask the questions about how much this fight may have taken out of Pacquaio but its easy to forget how much a war can even take out of the victor.

Now punch stats are useless when using them to ascertain a victor of a fight but I still think they hold relevance when used as an analytical tool, they are never precise but they can give you a rough estimate of how the fight went and staggeringly Pacquaio landed nearly double the amount of punches Marquez did despite throwing roughly the same.

We also have to take into account that not only was Marquez a lot easier to hit than he ever has been but he was also in a lot of trouble when he landed the definitive blow and if the fight had continued then there was a good chance that Pacquaio would have forced the stoppage. face all bloodied up and on wobbly legs, this isn't a version of Marquez we have seen often in the past.

Sure he has been put down a fair few times, but he has always got back up looking sturdy and able to continue where he left of. We won't know until and if they fight again but the ramifications of this fight could be drastic for both fighters.

Similar to TIM where both men suffered in a grueling match and we're never the same afterwards I can foresee a similar decline for both men if they continue to fight on.

Thoughts?

Pacquiao was landing the left hand at will at times and i thought he was on the way to a mercy stoppage, but then Marquez timed him to perfection. Physically it will have damaged both a bit, but mentally how does Pacquiao go back to being an aggressive gun-slinger having been wiped out going in for the kill? Especially if they fight again, will Manny be able to force himself into harms way to land the left?

I reckon Marquez is un-ruin-able, he hasn't even got the best chin but his heart is just farcical, his will to win is insane. I suppose all fighters burn out at one point but with Marquez I'll see it when I believe it.

Mentality wise, it could have effects on Marquez, having fulfilled his main goal and after eights years of what could be called obsessive behavior (maybes even downplaying it there) will he have the will, the strength, the edge and the discipline to continue the way he has been. It could of course spur him on more but reaching the top of the tower can have an adverse effect sometimes.

He doesn't seem the sort to fall into that trap but who knows.

It's hard to tell right now how much the fight has taken out of both fighters. But I definitely think this may have taken more out of Pacman than Marquez, being knocked out clean like that will have affect on his mentality and I see Pac being a lot more wary in future. If and when there is a 5th fight I see it being more similar to the 3rd with Pac trying to box Marquez instead of pressuring and flurrying in case he walks on to another big overhand right bomb. As @Teeto said Marquez heart is ridiculous, he has been knocked down countless times but never out, he always, always gets back up and I don't see this changing anytime soon.

Thought Marquez was on his way too a brutal stoppage defeat before that leveller, he could well deterioate pretty quickly as he's pushing 40, achieved a massive ambition of his ( could struggle for motivation from now on) and took a great deal of punishment on Saturday.
As for Pac, he was looking great before the ko, so I'd be expecting a mental decline rather than a physical one. As Thomas suggests, he could become a bit gun shy.

Yeah I think Pacquaio will suffer some form of mental decline as well, he already has over the past couple of years. I just think this could be their TIM whereby both guys aren't the same afterwards. An eight year rivalry can be mentally destroying and they have punished each other a fair bit.

I'm not expecting either to start getting beat of B-level fighters or anything but I just think we could start to see them both starting to slip back now. Pacquaio already has if course but maybes even more. I think both guys have about two years left max.
