CHB I want your thoughts on this topic and thank you in advance for all replies.

As fans we love nothing more than some all-out-warfare in fights. Two fighters battling away to be crowned winner and willing to give their all to do so. Of course the upside is that it's exciting for us to watch but for fighters it puts some mileage on the clock. Upon leaving the ring the winner and loser don't just leave with a W and an L, no, they sometimes lose 'something' in that ring and for the rest of their days in many cases.

I'm sure we'd have a list as large as the yellow pages of fighters that were ruined following a loss be it ko or wide points. But what interests me more is the downward spiral of the boxer who's hand was raised. A fighter who got the 'W' in the bout but then went on a decline as a result.

Looking forward to replies on this, hopefully of fighters in colour days rather than black and white.

Muhammad Ali > Joe Frazier 3 would be the stand out although a few wars beofore that will have helped as well.

Juan manuel Lopez > Roger Mtagwa really highlighted Lopez' faults and how to effectively beat him

Devon Alexander > Andreas Kotelnyk completely exposed him

I'm not totally sure on this one as I believe other factors are involved but:

Pacquaio > Margarito

Even though he dominated he took a fair few solid shots from a guy over 20lbs bigger. Since the fight he has never looked like the beast he was again. Different style opponents, distractions due to politics, movies, music, fame etc, getting older, style not made for longevity, unfocussed, nangling ongoing farce with Mayweather etc all play a part as well I suppose but he hasn't looked like the same guy since that fight.

thats a good shout imo, it was one of the most brutal beatings ive seen that didnt get stopped, he basically ended margo's career, but since then he hasn't recaptured the same form. part of me thinks once hed accomplished this, bar mayweather, there was no one left to really challenge him and boxing has taken a backward step, id like to see him close to his best again but i dont think we will

I think Margarito did more damage to Pacquiao than any previous opponent had done.

Marquez and Vazquez ruined each other.

The 2nd Bowe fight took a lot out of Golota too IMO. I don't think signing to fight Lewis immediately after did him any favours, mind.

Lewis whacked Shannon Briggs....

Marquez ended Katsidis.... and Diaz.... and Casamayor.

Hopkins and Trinidad did their fair share of wrecking too - not many were the same after facing either of those two.

Ooh wow, tough question.

First one to come to my mind was Roy Jones over John Ruiz. While the fight itself didnt ruin Roy, the step down in weight afterwards did. He would never look the same again. Or is that cheating?

The reason I ask this question is because we can all talk about boxers that lost and then faded away. Many say JMM destroyed Katsidis but I'd say the Guerrero fight gave a blueprint and he was absolutely hammered that night.

For me I'd say Eubank v Watson and Benn v G-Man because of tragedies but I'm talking a fighter that wins (non-tragedy) and then falls away.

Great replies and look forward to more.

its a good question, i thought this would be easy, especially as commentators love saying it after a hard fought win, but im really stumped, other than RJJ-Ruiz and Pac-Marg (where tehre were other issues) i really cant think of a fighter getting the Win but not being able to perform to the same standard :think

Not ruined as such but Erik Morales Vs Manny Pacquiao I. Despite being a tough fight and even though he still went on to achieve more in boxing i definatly think that 12th and final round took something (not ruin) out of Morales. What was he thinking anyway  suppose why we love him though :lp

Would RJJ/Tarver not be the better example - I know it was the coming down in weight, but that was the last win we really saw from Jones - and pushing himself through that fight, the weight drop, the win against a tough, good fighter. I think it was that that ruined him more than anything else.

I sometimes wonder if Carl Johansenn softened up Mitchell?
