Dempsey vs Willard, we've all heard those old stories about Dempsey supposedly having plaster of Paris, or even an iron bolt in his glove and dismissed them. But this fight really was suspicious. In three rounds Willard, a fighter with a good chin, was knocked down 7 times in the first round and had his jaw, cheekbone and ribs broken, aswell as losing some teeth. I know Dempsey was a murderous puncher and all, but ive never heard of a gloved fight in history where a fighter took that kind of beating in only three rounds. Willard would have had less injuries in a mugging.

Obviously I cant prove it or anything, but its a fight i always view suspiciously.

S, get rid of your "suspicion". Dempsey at this time was truly a murderous puncher when he kod Jess Willard. The only thing Dempsey had in his gloves was 10 fingers. Nat Fleischer was watching Teddy Hayes bandage Dempsey's hands carefully as well as a member of Willard's corner. Dempsey as seen on film walked in the ring sans gloves which was put on with a member of Willard's entourage watching...Prior to this fight in 1919, Dempsey flattened big men as Carl Morris, Arthur Pelky,Fred Fulton,Carl Morris, Gunboat Smith ALL in a round or two before meeting Willard...They didn't call Dempsey 'the giant killer " for nothing..
Willard suffered so much terrible damage because any other referee would have STOPPED the fight after 3 or 4 knockdowns, but the ref
Ollie Pecord allowed Willard absorb more than one fight of punishment...Another large man Fred Fulton was put to sleep in less than one minute
with nary a scratch on him...Give the prime Manassa Mauler his due, after hooking up with Jack Kearns as his mentor and manager....

Three things. The likelihood is that the damage done to Willard is over-stated. Secondly, Willard was desperately rusty for that fight. Give any fighter long enough without competition, and a puncher will destroy him. Finally, the "plaster-of-paris" story has been de-bunked. It's the bolt or nothing. My guess is nothing.

I have seen the Dempsey/Willard fight many times and I would imagine if Dempsey had had a bolt concealed the damage inflicted on Willard would of been probably far worse

Does anyone imagine CONCEALING a "bolt" in each hand under small gloves what would happen to Dempsey's knuckles ? They would have been shattered
to pieces from the blows he landed on Willard or anyone for that matter...The whole idea is ludicrous for that reason alone, let alone the fact that
Nat Fleischer and a Willard second watched Dempsey being gauzed in his dressing room prior to walking to the ring without gloves on as shown by film seen today...

Nigel benn's ko of mike chilambe not that I am saying it was a fixed fight to get benn a win. This fight I have seen loads and can never understand why chilambe's money was not withheld at least for a while .the African lion once in the ring turned into a lamb got slightly hit and said than you and goodnight . Not a fixed fight but certainly dodgey

I think the thing with the Willard fight is a fairly unique set of circumstances occurred. A young hungry lion with ferocious punching power meets the older rusty champion who was never that good in the first place but has slipped a bit. Despite that he has a massive size advantage and a decent chin. Dempsey is powerful enough to batter the big Willard but Willard is big and tough enough to keep going for 3 rounds. Add to that that Dempsey was allowed to stand over his victim when he got up to restart the beating doesnt surprise me that Willard suffered some of the injuries that he did.

I always thought about that when I heard this fable. I'm not sure how you would put a bolt in without doing major damage to your hands.
