South African heavyweight boxer Francois Botha - the man seemingly robbed of victory in his fight against Sonny Bill Williams - has reportedly tested positive for two banned substances.

Australia's Channel 9 is reporting that a blood sample collected a few days before the bout has shown Botha used phentermine, which is an appettite supressant that can lead to hostility and "and urge to attack", and benzodiazepines, a muscle relaxant. Both are on the WADA (World Anti-Drug Agency) banned list.

The network suggests Williams may now get more credit for a performance that was already shrouded in controversy. The fight was scheduled for 12 rounds, the bout was apparently shortened to just 10, with some claiming Botha's camp was only notified late in the fight.

Botha, 44, has tested positive before - for the steroid nandrolone - after his win over German Axel Schulz in 1995. His camp claimed he had been prescribed the drug for an arm injury. The fight was declared a "no contest" and the IBF does not recgonize him as a former champion

I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't really and this was just a way at making SBW look better.

Just coming on here to post this.

An Australian newspaper has reported that Francois Botha failed a dope test before his heavyweight bout with Sonny Bill Williams in Brisbane on Friday.

The Sydney Morning Herald alleges that the South African veteran tested positive for phentermine which is a banned appetite suppressant.

These reports add further doubts on the credibility of the controversial fight which former Kiwi rugby star Williams won on points.

It was Williams's sixth win in six bouts and his fight with the 44-year-old was reduced to 10 rounds from the original 12 - which was only decided on the day of the clash.

Doubts surfaced over the fight's status as a purported World Boxing Association (WBA) international heavyweight title bout after local media reported that no officials from the organisation were present.

And an incensed Botha, who was well on top during the closing rounds, described the late change of bout length as 'match-fixing' and demanded a rematch.

This entire situation is a farce.

From a more comprehensive article:

Results of a urine sample submitted by the 44-year-old South African in Brisbane last Tuesday under WBA regulations show he had Phentermine - a banned stimulant - in his system.

The drugs test, which has now been forwarded to the WBA's global headquarters in Panama, also detected Benzodiazepine, which suggested Botha was also using a valium-type product.

After the fight, Williams has tried to placate Botha with a rematch in South Africa, although it seems unlikely to be sanctioned by the World Boxing Association.
Taking a weight loss drug and valium several days before a bout is just not going to help performance. It's a complete non-issue in that respect.

The whole thing was a farce, the WBA isn't even sure they sanctioned it. From the same piece:

WBA's Oceania representative Brad Vocale who cast serious doubts over the legitimacy of a main event broadcast live in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

The WBA stipulates its title fights must be contested over 12 three-minute rounds but as far as Vocale was concerned that discrepancy was just the beginning. "This fight was advertised as a WBA international fight, I have my doubts as to whether it actually was really sanctioned by the WBA," Vocale told Australia's Fox Sports network.

[...]
Williams had never fought 10 rounds until Friday night so was not qualified to even challenge for a WBA crown, according to Vocale.
[...]

He said the absence of a WBA appointed referee, judge or supervisor at the venue further diminished the legitimacy of the bout.

What a joke. The WBA is going to investigate or, in other terms: nothing's going to happen.

The entire thing was probably scripted.
