Howdy,

Now, Russell Jr is one of my boys, to me I think he has everything. He can counter punch effectively, doesn't get caught often, has very fast hands, good power and just seems to have a very focused mentality.

Russell Jr scored a KO of the year candidate last night, but realistically needs to step it up to title contention in his next 5 fights. What do you think of Russell? Do you see what I see? Who should he aim to be fighting over the next 12/18 months?

Here's the fight from last night, it'll need to fight off strong competition from Ovil-Enzo for KO of the night though.

Anyone see any comparisons with Donaire? Stalking at mid range, waiting for his opponent to lead, often drawing the lead, quick and accurate combinations, killer lead hook. They move around the ring in a very similar way too.

Hi Bryn!!!

What I think he's got to look at esp. as he moves up in quality is not letting himself become too inactive if the other guy isn't coming forward or punching. I'm not saying swing wildly but he needs to work more for his openings rather than waiting on his opponent. Great talent though, time to step up and see what he's got.

I have Russell Jr in my prediction league and he will make Wallet eat another avatar next year.

Rafa Marquez would be next up if I had my choice. He may be tied up though as he is talking about rematching Pabs pinup after blaming his loss on a dodgy fish.

He's class. I think it's time for him to start stepping up his opposition already. You can't keep fighting people that you can blow out in a few rounds and then expect to be able to do that in the bigger fights.

Dat handspeed mmmmmmmmmmmmm

Really looking forward to seeing him again.

Peach shorts.

An awful lot of young fighters can get to a certain level based on pure athletic ability alone before any lack of boxing ability can be taken advantage of. He's evidently got acres of talent but it's difficult to evaluate quite how much considering his level of opposition. Added to that his best opponents have all been similarly made for him in that they were slow, plodding dudes. Blitzing a past it Heriberto Ruiz is great and all, but when it's not built upon properly you get left feeling kind of underwhelmed with his progression thus far.

That said I reckon he'll prove his quality when he does make the step up. His defense is pretty reliant on reflexes and at times I think he gets caught a bit carelessly because of that, but overall there aren't too many glaring frailties in his game. He has these really nice subtle steps he takes to avoid those lazy jabs and leave himself with ample room to counter. He's ridiculously explosive too to go with his speed, which'll carry through different weights if he chooses to do so(not sure how likely that is considering he's like 5'5'' or something).

I wouldn't object to seeing him against someone like Yordan. That kind of level is what he should probably be aiming for next anyways I reckon.

He'd be safer just trying his luck against Russell.

I think GBP are still wary of how they handled Daniel Jacobs.
Looking at a top 10 and you don't see anything but a gigantic leap up for him. He looks very comfortable at the weight so I don't think moving up is an option either. I think they are just going to have to throw him at the deep end and see how he does.

1 Orlando Salido
2 Celestino Caballero
3 Chris John
5 Daniel Ponce De Leon
6 Miguel Angel Garcia
7 Jhonny Gonzalez
8 Cristian Mijares
9 Juan Manuel Lopez
10 Javier Fortuna

Yordan is a good shout @Pabby!

He looks great but he hasn't fought anybody yet. I've seen many mega prospects come undone when they have stepped up (about 5 in the last two years). I don't think this will happen on a Lemieux style scale but I withhold my full judgement on him until he at least fights some fringe/gatekeeper type boxers.

Cheers guys, some interesting points.

I think everyone agrees that he's another one of these fighters that looks great at this level but until he steps it up we'll not know what he rreally has to offer.

I'm not usually a believer in 90% if prospects, but I must say I am sold on GR Jr.

Didn't see Russell's fight last night, but from what I hear about the ko and what I see from his previous fights he's got some serious ability. Very quick hands, a good crowd pleasing style, solid defensively and obvious power. His reach and size is one thing that concerns me though, it could lead to him being tagged by a more rangy opponent on his way in. I think Mikey Garcia would be the type of fighter that Russell would have load's of trouble with.

I thought Syllakh looked awesome but he he was well found out. Lemieux, Kirkland, Linares, Ortiz, Berto, Khan etc all found out massively (at different stages of course) so never write a cheque on them. Broner is next.
