over at the scene.

Reportedly, the whole card did an average of 758,000. The article didn't give any number for the Golovkin-Geale average but I did some quick math and it'd be about 914,000.

Basically, any card doing below 1mil average is poor for HBO. It's also poor for Golovkin, since it's a big step back in the ratings climb he's been on. Honestly, I don't understand why the ratings were so (relatively) bad. GGG-Stevens did 1.4mil, he got another casual-friendly KO in that and got another KO is February off US air. Geale was his best opponent and GGG's popularity has been steadily increasing so it's weird that not many people tuned in for this. :conf

Any amercians able to provide some insight on this?

It appears like boxing's ratings have been down as a whole this year. I thought it was just the ppvs, but even the regular cards on HBO and Showtime are down

Surprisingly Crawford vs Gamboa holding the crown for best premium cable ratings.

Major reason why ratings are down on non ppv cards is cause a major draw like Chavez Jr is inactive and the big stars rating drawers have all fought on PPV only such as Cotto, Canelo,Broner........If those 4 fighters fight on regular HBO/Sho in the 4th quarter of this year the ratings will be back to where they were in 2013.

First fight in the MSG main room, which seats about 9K for boxing, and he put over 8K butts in the seats. GGG did this against a non-American opponent who everybody expected to take him a few rounds, but posed no serious threat (especially in regards to power) during the "dog days of summer".

I don't see any reason for concern. Once GGG gets in there with a Cotto, Canelo or Chavez, his stock will significantly rise in terms of mainstream appeal. Until then he just needs to keep lining them up and knocking them down.

july and august are always the worst months for boxing, its why you never see big ppv fights in those months, people are out doing things and going on vacation, nothing more to it than that really.

Still the 8th most viewed fight this year. Poor ratings but is in the height of summer and a year of low ratings as it is, hopefully his next fight picks back up to normal

Odd because there wasn't anything else sports related to really draw away the audience. No football, basketball, or hockey this time of year, only baseball and the NY teams had already played.

This is a big vacation time of year and ratings for TV as a whole are down for the summer, though.

I know everyone loves GGG but that was like the 1000000 hbo wipe out in a row for him. I love boxing but even I was bored.

Didn't think about people being on vacation, good point. Geale wasn't exactly well known for the US audience but GGG is a TV attraction so I thought he;d continue pulling in great ratings. The 8.5k live crowd is pretty good though and it shows his popularity is increasing.

In the context of ratings, the result of the fight has no meaning.
