A lot of people weren't convinced that Saul Alvarez was all he was hyped up to be but with his recent win over fellow top light-middleweight Austin Trout, how do you rate Canelo now?

Personally I've always felt he was the real deal. He's exciting and marketable. He can punch but his boxing skill is still developing all the time and I like that he often mixes it up rather than get carried away with one particular attribute that works.

He's still only 22 but he's been a pro for nearly 8 years! His record hasn't been great up til now and the way he was handed a supposed "world title" was pathetic but he's still got a few decent wins already and the Trout win should catapult him to the next level. A fight with Mayweather would be huge and it's a fight that I may actually even back him to win.

What are your thoughts on the young Mexican superstar?

He's good. Fought a smart, tough fight against a top flight opponent and won pulling away at the end. Let's see him do it again. I hope there isn't any need or push from his people to move up in weight. he's young, and that time will come, but there are more than enough challengers in the jr. middleweight division. he puts butts in seats and eyes to the tv. not in love with him like other people, but I love boxing so I know we need him...

True that. Mexico plays a large part in sustaining American boxing. We need America, America needs Mexico, Mexico needs Alvarez....we need Alvarez.

I rate Alavarez about as highly as I did before he fought Trout. His skillset is better than he gets credit for IMO.

You can't rate him P4P, but he certainly has the potential to become one.

He ticked a lot of boxes for me. He showed a maturity in the ring beyond his years which is expected given the number of fights he has had. You could tell Trout's strategy relied on Canelo being a lot more wild then he actually was. He has power, accuracy and a sound defence. Even better, he sold 40,000 tickets and produced an entertaining spectacle.

His next few years should be all about stalking Mayweather. Martinez and Cotto are big PPV fights he should be chasing. Below that Trout rematch, the winner of Lara and Angulo. Rabchenko isn't in the class of the others but that would be an entertaining fight while it lasted.

Canelo-Mayweather could be a rerun of De La Hoya-Chavez in that a young, naturally heavier superstar beats an old, past-prime superstar.

If Mayweather agrees to it, it'll be massively on his terms:

Heavy gloves
Massive ring
At 150 (and probably a post weigh in limit)

Could 2013 Floyd beat Canelo in the ring at 172? His legs are slowing and Canelo just beat a 'slick, black American'.

I remember being highly impressed with him when he was around 19/20 but then his recent string of opponents and harboring the title deterred me slightly, this weekends win put him right back up there as potentially the next big thing in the sport. What I'm most impressed with is his ability to use multiple tactics, seems a very smart fighter to me. We've seen a good variety in his recent bouts from the traditional Mexican in him winging in left hooks to Lopez's body to a defensive strategy against Trout after defense seemed to be neglected in previous fights. He often gets praised for his patience in fights but I do worry for his urgency and workrate when he really needs to step on the gas behind in a fight

Brother Nazim thought that it was because of his weight making and that's why he kept telling Mosley to bang the body.

Really? Lara and molina already fought and i think most thought molina won. I happen to think both beat canelo, not because canelo isnt good but i just highly rate those two. I'd love those fights
if you are trying to build a star, do you think it makes sense to fight either of those guys? Best case you win but still look like shit. Neither guys are TV friendly at all.

Canelo has been pretty firm in saying he does not want to move to middleweight in the past when speaking about a possible fight with Chavez Jr though.
I don't think he looks ghostly at the weigh-ins either.

He's too short for middleweight. He's got a very stocky shape.

I was expecting Trout to school him honestly. I rated Trout very highly and still do, like many I saw the fight as just about even. Canelo's defence was the big factor where he showed improvement for me. Despite that his work rate wasn't great and in a lot of the round he won he was clearly being out landed but his heavier hands and being able to hurt Trout got the job done. He certainly impressed me overall though, Floyd is a whole different task though. He won't be able to tag Floyd like he did Trout, and Mayweather will have no problems landing where Trout was bein made to look silly, but his massive size and strength advantage could be a factor. Not if he throws 10 punches a round, he has to up his workrate and it did look at times like he was struggling stamina wise.

I worry about where he is going to go, he just dosnt seem like a middleweight. I like him and still think he is going to be one of the next huge stars of boxing, he probably already is up there. I just wonder where his career will go and how long he can hold out at 154. To keep his career interesting he would just have to keep persuading big name welters to move up, but that not exactly what anyone would want to be remembered for.
