Floyd Mayweather is clearly the king of a solid, if not spectacular, division at 147 lbs but while the throne is held by Mayweather, it's looking a very competitive division beneath.
Below that Juan Manuel Marquez and Tim Bradley look set to square off in September, with Manny Pacquiao returning later in the year.
After that there's a list of names that have all competed for titles and belts but each have their own flaws and share of defeats at top level. Guys like Ruslan Provodkinov, Robert Guerrero, Devon Alexander, Andre Berto, Victor Ortiz, Paulie Malignaggi, Marcos Maidana, Josesito Lopez etc.
Then there are a few unbeaten contenders that are yet to really face top level competition but should be stepping up soon: Kell Brook, Keith Thurman, Jessie Vargas, Kevin Bizier, Diego Gabriel Chavez etc.
Perhaps the most exciting prospect for the welterweight division is the imminent arrival of some top talent from the division below. Danny Garcia, Lucas Matthysse, Lamont Peterson, Amir Khan, Mike Alvarado, Brandon Rios etc could all realistically be making the move to the division within the next 6 to 12 months. Not to forget that Adrien Broner also makes his move into the division next month against Malignaggi.
What do you think the future holds for some of these exciting talents?
