Who would you say have been champion/number 1 in their division?

Who would you say has been number 1 but with question marks around others in the division?

Who has been a 'belt holder' only?

Who are the paper champions?

Joe bowker at bantamweight is one that often gets overlooked

Good call. It's hard to call where the old timers sit. I know a guy from Will curley from up here had a claim to a world title but I'm pretty sure he wasn't really any sort of world champ and just a contender.

Bowker was a world champ though, was he number one in the division at the time though. I really don't know

Should be no question over Naz.

Freddie Welsh is one of the greatest lightweights of all time. Some questionable defences (often could only lose title if he was stopped, which was hard to do) and proved himself the best when he beat Benny Leonard in their second fight.

Conteh beating Ahumada, who was robbed against Foster, should see him as the genuine champ' but inactivity due to hand injuries would see most call Galindez the main man shortly after Conteh won the belt.

It's hard to call on Jackie Paterson, though with all his titles at two different weights he must've been the best guy around for a time. Yes he won the Flyweight title off Kane but that bout is one of the stupidest title fights I've ever seen, not just at fly but at any weight.

Buchanan when he beat Laguna.

Hmmm guys who were undoubtedly number 1 from British shores

Calzaghe
Hatton
Lewis
Hamed
Haye
Turpin
Honeyghan
Wilde
Stracey
Fitzsimmons
Welsh
Patterson
Buchanan
Bowler
T K Lewis
Some Others

And of course, the goat - Frank Bruno

Much easier to identify in earlier climates. I know today some people cling onto 1v2 but without unifications it's hard pinning down a consensus number 1.

minter is tough to say cos Hagler was seen by many as the best in the world before they fought.
Hagler may of been seen as the number one middleweight but rightly or wrongly vito was the man with monzon's belts .boom boom took them away and brought them back to England he was globally recognised as the undisputed middleweight champ . He was a true lineal champion

yeah but if you hold a belt and aren't globally recognised as number 1 you're a paper champ in my eyes. I dont have much conviction on this specific case, need to watch Hagler v Vito again.
