...light fly and minimumweight were abolished?

The lower weights are, as we know, a niche subject of the sport (at least in the West). Even some hardcore fans don't acknowledge their existence (I was one of them).

However, do you think things would be different if the talent pool at flyweight was significantly strengthened by including all of those currently fighting below the 112lb weight class?

Hypothetically, the top of the division could look something like this:

1. Brian Viloria
2. Roman Gonzalez
3. Moruti Mthalane
4. Kazuto Ioka
5. Adrian Hernandez
6. Toshiyuki Igarashi
7. Hernan Marquez
8. Donnie Nietes
9. Denver Cuello
10. Nkosinathi Joyi

I think most would agree that it would be one of the strongest divisions around right now. I could even remove the aforementioned 10 from the equation, and the division would still be stronger than some. Yet, do you think the stigma that is aimed towards the lower weights would still exist, or would people be more receptive of those 'midget boxers'?

Your thoughts :good

Huge fan of the lower weights and I've got to be honest, I'm glad we have so many weights down there. I doubt the likes of Ioka or Gonzalez would have the attention they have with the hardcore fans without the number of divisions they have around there. The number of top class fights at 112 and below is, as you've pointed out, simply amazing, a shame that supposed fans turn a blind eye.

Funny that 2 of the very best fights of 2012 took place in those lower weights on the same night (Viloria v Marquez, Gonzalez v Estrada). One of the real stand out fights of 2011 (Hernandez v Porpramook) again took place at 108 and one of the top fights in 2010 also took place down there (Calderon v Segura). That's with out even mentioning Yaegashi v Porpramook.

It would certainly boost the division up. I really like the little weights, especially at the minute but between the three of them so many good fights are easy to avoid. In the unfavourable divisions the best should be fighting each other all the time as well.

I think it depends on how quickly he is moved up. Then again, I thought Ioka needed a couple more fights before moving onto world level, but everyone knows how that turned out :yep

Looks very good so far; he has also been receiving a lot of hype in Japan.
