This is one of the best fantasy fights I saw discussed on the other website.

15 round fight using modern rules (i.e. no waiting over an opponent)

I say jack starts strong and maybe sweeps the first 4 rounds but then rocky takes over. by round 12 we'd be looking at a british ref stoppage and by round 14 he'd get knocked out.

So I'm saying Rocky by late stoppage.

Thoughts?

I have always fancied Marciano by late stoppage on this one.

Dempsey may have had faster feet and a huge reach advantage but i just see Marciano walking him down, taking everything Dempsey has to offer, then mauling him late.

I'm a big fan of Marciano but Ive always thought Dempsey would beat him, his superior speed being key.

This would be an absolute bloodbath of a fight, neither guy would ever be the same afterwards.

I'm the same now.

I used to think jack did everything rocky did but a bit better. however I can't shake the feeling that rocky would have been just as dominant if the timelines were reversed and people would be discussing rocky as a demi god.

rocky to walk him down and stop him late, agreed.

I know we're all told that dempsey was much faster but looking at film I'm not overly convinced

It's hard for me because all the writeup's describe Jack's speed as incredible and whilst he does look fast on film, he doesn't look incredibly fast to me. There must be something in the quality of recording to do with it but I'm unsure how to resolve it.

Dempsey (he was the harder hitter IMO, is this controversial ?)
And Dempsey was faster, in hands and feet......more versatile footwork also.....
Dempsey by UD with two KD during the fight......

I think even if you imagine Jack as fast as some people like to say he is, i still think Marciano beats him by walking him down. I think the only pre 50s fighters i would give a 50/50 chance or better with agaisnt Marciano are Johnson, Tunney and Louis.

In general, as a HW, I don't overly rate Marciano as a h2h fighter. but giving a 190 weight limit I don't think I see him losing to anyone.

closest would be Johnson but given the problems Hart caused him (however you see the fight you must accept it as being close and competitive) I have to consider that Rocky would defeat a Johnson weighing under the 190 limit.

Glad to see you here!

Regarding power I see Dempsey as being more explosive and Rocky as being more of an accumulative puncher.

then again Rocky did spark Jersey with one great shot so it's hard to say.

I'd take Marciano personally, I think he was the better fighter ultimately. Jack Dempsey at his utmost was something to behold, with more skill than Rocky Marciano, that much must be said, but Rocky is just so head on, and I think it's very clear that he has the ability to stop Dempsey, which I would bet on here.

I agree with not rating him at Heavyweight, its unfair to him to rate him as a heavyweight. I think comparing to today's fighters its probably fairer to think of him as a Light Heavyweight because of the re hydration.

The thought of matching him up with Wlad is as ridiculous as say matching up tarver with Wlad.

I reckon in the ring man to man he beats anyone from cw down in today's era.

I think I agree with this, at that sort of weight it's impossible to not be amazed at Rocky'sd aulity of opposition.

Marciano down early, no doubt cut in the mid-rounds by Dempseys fast, slashing punches, but is cuter down the stretch, taking less punishment, and finally blasts Dempsey out in a war of attrition.

Marciano was greater, better, all of it. Dempsey was quicker though, and he's certainly one of the 185-190lb guys that would give Marciano a bit of trouble.

One man I think might be able to turn the trick on The Rock around his best weight; The Fighting Marine. And that's an italics hunch, not a strong one.

That would be a tremendous fight, I would go with Marciano myself, but what a fight. A lot of people don't realise how rugged Tunney was, because the most prominent image in their minds eye is of him maintaining long range against Dempsey and using excessive movement against him.

I favor Tunney over Marciano very strongly if its 12 rounds, and would still favor him over Marciano over 15 but i do recognize Marciano has an improved chance with the extra 3 rounds.

It seems to me people often think Tunney was some flimsy fairy who floats around the ring but swipe him and he is out and they forget he managed to give as good as he got when it came to pushing around Dempsey.
