Chavez Jr's Return on 6/22: Barker Also in The Running
Posted by: Rick Reeno on 3/29/2013 .

Former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32KOs) is still on target to return on June 22nd, on HBO, in either Texas or Mexico, according to Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum.

Chavez, 27-years-old, will return for the first time since suffering a twelve round decision loss to Sergio Martinez last September. Following the fight, it was revealed that Chavez had tested positive for marijuana. The Nevada State Athletic Commission suspended him for nine months and issued a massive fine of $900,000 dollars. Chavez's suspension expires on June 15th.

Among the candidates for Julio's return - Brian Vera (22-6, 13KOs), who returns tomorrow night against Donatas Bondorovas (17-3-1, 6KOs) at Turning StoneCasino in New York. There is also tough contender Matthew Macklin (29-4, 20KOs). And the third possibility, says Arum, is British middleweight Darren Barker (25-1, 16KOs). The lone loss on Barker's record came at the hands of Sergio Martinez by way of an eleventh round TKO.

I think it will be Vera.

It looks to me like they're just throwing those names in there.

If Macklin isn't willing to fight GGG without a tune up I can't see him fighting JCC either.

Vera's not a bad fight. he has to win tonight, of course. Barker wouldn't challenge him,but would go rounds so that would be good. Martinez rematch in the fall is what I expect unless the champion fights GGG...

Chavez Jr. Says Barker is Ahead of The Pack For June 22
Posted by: Salvador Rodriguez on 4/1/2013 .

By Salvador Rodriguez

Former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1, 32KOs) says British contender Darren Barker (25-1, 16KOs) is the frontrunner to fight him on June 22nd, which the boxer wants to take place at the Arena in Mexico City. Chavez has not fought since suffering a twelve round decision to Sergio Martinez last September. The only loss suffered by Barker was also at the hands of Martinez. HBO would televise the contest in the United States.

"I think Barker is a good fighter. He only lost to Maravilla Martinez and I would like to fight someone of that level. Making a fight with [Matthew] Macklin seems to have been difficult, and because of that Barker has turned into a good candidate - although there are some others being considered. I also like the idea of having the fight in Mexico City, because the crowd there is knowledgeable and it would be a good challenge for me," Chavez said.

WBC lifts Chavez Jr. suspension

By Gabriel F. Cordero

The WBC, which had indefinitely suspended former world champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. after he tested positive for marijuana following his loss to Sergio Martínez last September, has announced it will lift all sanctions in place against Chavez Jr. and support a Martinez-Chavez Jr. rematch. Junior will now be put back in the WBC rankings and eligible to compete in any available WBC title fight.
Also according to the scene Jose Sulaiman will be at ringside for Martinez - Murray, it appears the wheels in motion for a rematch if they come through their fights

They said something on ringside about this being at a 164 lb catchweight.

If that's the case then I take back my confidence in Barker beating him. I agree with Jim Watt, he should stay away if they try to make it above middleweight. Either fight at the limit or fuck off up in weight.

I can see why Barker would take it. Better opportunities may come along but can he trust his body to last? If there is decent money for a significant fight he probably has to take it. Even with a loss he can come back and fight Lee and Murray and the winner has a chance of another big fight
