ANTHONY JOSHUA could be set for an April showdown with British rival Dereck Chisora. The Watford-born heavyweight star is due out again on April 9 at London’s O2 Arena. Chisora’s promoter Kalle Sauerland wants talks with Joshua’s man Eddie Hearn about a possible Europeantitle clash.Former world title challenger Chisora, 32, was due to face European champion Robert Helenius for the strap butthe Swedish slugger is set to vacate the belt.
Sauerland said: “We’ve just had some news through that Helenius will relinquish the European title rather thanface Chisora.“We are looking at the next in line and that is Joshua.“Look, we know fighters have the demands but we want to make a deal happen.“I will look to sit down with Eddie over the coming days and see if we can get this done.“Dereck is up for the fight, he is ready for April 9 if we can do it. We know that is when Joshua is fighting.â€
The fight makes sense when you think about Joshua being next in line for the Euro title and how it will probably do decent money as a domestic showdown. But I think Chisora is being fed to the lions here. Mentally I think he seemed almost ruined after the second Fury fight. I think he might just be looking for one last decent payday. He was interrupting Martin's press conference the other day and calling him out (mind you who isn't calling Martin out? Everyone wants a piece of the IBF now. Even Szpilka was calling Martin out from his hospital bed).
So I can understand why Joshua vs. Chisora looks good on paper. Very winnable fight for Joshua against someone with a little bit of name power and a fair bit of top level experience. The most confusing part of this to me is why Helenius is vacating the title at all. I doubt he fears a rematch with Chisora despite most people giving the first fight to Dereck. I know he was having legal problems but in what way would this be related to that?
