How often does this happen and how legal is this. The only instance I can think of, of the top of my head is Pacquaio v Mosley where Bayliss called a knockdown on Pacquaio even though it was a blatant push. The judges ignored this in the scoring (rightly) but are they meant to do that even if they believe they are correct. I'll think some examples up soon but there has been loads of times I have seen referees call something wrongly and the judges just go with it anyway.

I'm not sure what the letter of the law is, but I don't agree with it.

The referee is in the best position to make the call, so the judges should go with what he ruled.

Its a strange one because its pretty rare it happens and the example I gave didn't really matter because the fight was one sided anyway but I wonder what would happen if it happened in a fight where the result counted on it.

I agree with this. It might seem silly when the ref makes a blatant error but I'd rather that than the judges having the freedom to do what they want.

I don't know. I think mostly the judges should follow the referee's decision, but I wouldn't like there to be a rule (maybe there already is) that states that they have to. At the end of the day it's the judges decision that counts and it would be very harsh if one bad call from a referee forced the judges to make a bad decision even if they all strongly disagreed with the ruling. Then again the referee is the one that's controlling the fight and taking power away from him might not be a good thing so it's a difficult one.
