Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer has advised BoxingScene.com that WBC interim-junior welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse (32-2, 30KOs) is very interested in facing his Aregentine countryman Marcos Maidana (31-3, 28KOs) - if Maidana defeats Jesus Soto-Karass on Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Maidana-Karass will take place on the undercard of Showtime's quadrupleheader, which is headlined by Saul Alvarez vs. Josesito Lopez.

Matthysse-Maidana has been brewing since the two boxers fought each other in the amateurs. They exchanged punches in a final eliminator where the winner moved forward to represent Argentina in a pre-Olympic tournament. Maidana was awarded the victory.

Matthysse's management told Schaefer that fighting Maidana is "at the top of their list."

Top fight, Maidana bested him in the amateurs winning 3 against 1 draw I think.

Matthysee will be looking to put the record straight and make a bigger name for himself, also making sure he is noted as the better Argie. Maidana is crude but he can punch so it'll be interesting to see if Matthysee goes for all out war or if he boxes early and draws him in late. Maidana has shown a good chin as well even though he has been down a fair few times so it would be a good statement if he stops him.

Maidana will need the win, if he loses then he will be out in the cold a bit having lost to Kotelnyk, Khan, Alexander and Matthysee.

You know I don't think either guy will be out in the cold providing this lives up to expectations. I think that's somethings that has improved in boxing in recent years. A loss used to be devastating but I think as long as you put on a fine performance, you'll still get decent fights if you have a good promoter.
I'm hoping that's the case with Ajose anyway!

Matthysse should really win this, maybe even a stoppage late on from his body punching which is more consistent and accurate than Maidanas. But I am interested to see how Maidana is under Garcia, I'm thinking perhaps very well, if so the fight becomes even more interesting. For the record I think Maidana is the stronger more powerful of the two, but he is crude and doesnt throw his shots well often, Matthysse on the other hand (still strong) uses better technique and so gets more power in this way.

I agree, I think especially in the case of someone like Maidana, people dont care if he looses because they know he always makes it a war and he brings it everytime. I was watching a elie seckback video earlier, and apparently Roberto Duran has come over for saturdays boxing too watch Maidana, apparently hes a massive fan!

I agree with the consensus. I don't see Maidana troubling him, he's already faced punchers that have speed and hit from angles. Maidana is more of a heavy handed guy, he isn't going to put your lights out with any one punch. That's his one chance to win the fight because his boxing has actually regressed, he doesn't seem to have the hunger, his stamina is questionable. Matthyse looks pretty determined at the moment and seems to be showing the improved technique between the two.

I think Matthyse would break him down, to the body and head, it doesn't matter which it's going to happen. I don't even know if Maidana has a punchers chance really, Matthyse ever been hurt, does Maidana really whack punch for punch? Matthyse has the punchers chance, the best chance on points, all in his favour.

I meant more as a contender, he should still get another shot or two but he would be on his way to a gatekeeper like position with the top boxers assessing whether they are ready for a championship tilt.

I favour Mattysse, he's got the advantage in pretty much every department. I'm interested to see how this fight is going to pan out, as in who will be pressing forward or will both men refuse to take a backwards step and just go at it toe to toe.

This absolutely cannot disappoint.

I really can't believe Maidana has an advantage over him (2-0-1 I think). Matthysee smashes him now
I'm the same mate. Maidana must of developed a bit before him or something. Really can't see how he beats Matthysee now though. He has a punchers chance but even then he's so wild you'd expect Lucas to bust him up before he lands something. Maidana doesn't seem to take body shots as well as he takes head shots, Khan's shot was a beast of a shot though. Ortiz also dropped him with a body shot as well. I can see Lucas landing that straight to the body he likes and getting something out of it.
