I know this was talked about last month, but seemed to defuse a bit when Macklin said he wanted another fight first.

But the rumours started circulating again today, with Macklin writing on Twitter :mad:mattmacklin: Gona have some big news coming soon! #watchthisspace

He then proceeded to retweet everyone who mentioned Golovkin's name as an opponent, and I'm hearing the fight is nailed on for June 29th.

Great fight. Thoughts?

I think i'm the only person in the world that thinks macklin wins this one
Not at all mate. I'm sure Matthew thinks he can win too. But other than that, I think you guys are on your own

Nice one. Finally a decent opponent for GGG. Most people seem to rate Golovkin as #2 at middleweight already even though he's hardly fought anyone. This is his first proper top 10 opponent and hopefully can lead to a megafight with Martinez at the end of the year.

It's an entertaining matchup on paper but I really think Golovkin beats him up quite badly come the end.

I really think Macklin, who I rate as a top 3 middle, can cause him real problems here, great matchup

Great news. Good on Macklin for taking the fight, it shows his confidence at the highest level. Very good fight for Golovkin too. He hasn't faced a top contender yet but Macklin is a top 10 guy and hopefully it will be a well exposed fight in the USA. If he shines in this, as he should, the Martinez fight will be beautifully set up.

Golovkin wide on points for me, possibly with a few KD's along the way.

At middleweight, i have:

Martinez
Geale
Chavez (based mainly on the last round against Martinez it must be said)
Golovkin
Chocolate
Macklin
Pirog
Sturm
N'Dam
Barker

Soliman isn't there as he failed a drugs test (and clearly lost the Sturm fight IMO)

For me it's:

Martinez
Golovkin
Macklin
Chocolate
Chavez
Pirog
Sturm
N'Dam
Barker

So very similar list tbf, i think the top half is pretty fluid, whereas the second half is fairly easy to distinguish them.

I'd love a GGG vs Pirog fight

You've probably forgotten Geale. I hope so anyway

GGG was signed to fight Pirog IIRC, but Pirog had to withdraw with injury. Golovkin fought Proska instead

At this moment in time GGG has a bit of a Bute pre Froch feel about the hype around him. Looked very good knocking over 2nd tier championship fighters but is yet to get in the ring with a genuine middle contender.

ye i understand, difference being that GGG brutally destroyed Bute as an amateur and there's no question marks over durability. Wait and see how he does with someone who can take a shot and box and move a la Rosado though, who had some success but couldnt cope with GGG fists

I wonder what Macks plan is. He buckled quickly down the stretch against Sergio and he wasn't really pressured until the 2nd half. GGG will be stalking him from the opening bell I suspect. I think his best bet is to take it right to GGG like he did Strum and see if he can some respect. Worse case he's got well paid for a few minutes work.

I think I'd have Golovkin below Macklin, Chavez and Quillin in my rankings right now. Maybe I'm going too far the other way here but I think GGG's opposition has been very poor and I resent putting him as high as #2 before he even fights a top 10 fighter.

Finally a fight against a genuine contender. Props to Macklin for taking it when it looked like GGG was going to be left on the
shelf indefinitely. Macklin is being set up here by HBO to make GGG look viable as a Martinez opponent. Should do the trick nicely.
