Reading a book about Tunney at the moment and just read about Baer beating Primo for the Heavyweight Title.

For some reason I know little about him apart from the obvious fights.

What fights should I watch of his and what's the general feeling about him as a boxer and as Champion?

Remember Max fondly, JF, not so much for his fighting, but after he hung'em-up as part of a comedy team with Tony Canzonari, kibbitzing at Stillmans Gym with regulars and in every club and gin mill on Broadway. He was hail-fellow-well-met to all, with a big slap on the back.

Couldn't have been more gracious and accessible

Until fighters towered over the Washington Monument, Max was considered a giant. He was a perfectly proportioned athlete. Think he and his younger brother Buddy cornered the market on shoulders.

he was a very funny man...i was just posting about him here recently...
after the galento fight in the interview with lou costello he said "i busted up his mouth....he'll have a hard time eating spaghetti now.."

that fight was horrible....horrible....like two old drunks brawling outside a pub

this is a good indication of his great personality..

Must admit that almost everything I have read about him, obviously most of it concentrated around the Primo fight and the James J. Braddock fight and subsequent film, suggests that he had a love of life and a great sense of humour (the film portrayal of him is, however, at odds of a lot of the things I have read).

Found this last night.

H2H beast for anyone around his weight. great chin, great workrate, great power.

Lost to a past prime Loughran before walking through the division (much like Liston did) until running into a motivated Braddock.

incidentally I think the fight between him and Schmelling was between the best two fighters in the division.

Has there ever been a more lovable boxing personality than Max Baer ? Hell NO...Just imagine if Max Baer had half of Rocky Marciano's
spartan dedication to training, what with his great power and ability to take a punch, Maxie would be one of the greatest heavyweights...I vividly remember
watching Baer being introduced before a fight on tv, years after he retired. Maxie vaulted over the top rope into the ring...I remember thinking
"damn ,Baer is still in great shape ". Three weeks or so later, Baer suffered a massive heart attack and died alone in his hotel room...Today, Baer would have been
a sensation on television with his looks and amazing natural personality...
