I found an old KO magazine from 87 (June issue) and while thumbing through it i noticed a feature called KO Hall of Fame and in this issue it was about Monzon it has a short bio and is then mostly made up of pictures and a short summary of each picture . Under the picture of Monzon/Mundine it states that Australian Mundine was given a solid chance of upsetting Monzon in october 74 but the champion was never threatened and outclassed the challenger before stopping him.

is this true was Mundine really given a solid chance of upsetting Monzon ? back in 74 it is hard to believe he was

No yesterday was the first time i have ever read anything suggesting that mundine "that Mundine was given a solid chance of upsetting Monzon"

Mind you one of the readers letters i noticed yesterday was of the opinion that meldrick taylor would beat pernell whitaker and cited whitaker as having a dodgy or weak chin

Some posters on ESB mentioned that there was some rumours of Monzon avoiding Mundine in the 70's.

So probably some people considered Mundine a legitimate threat to Monzon's supremacy.

Betting odds that I've heard of were 5-2 and 3-1 in favour of Monzon.

I was wondering about copyright if we post stuff for magazines, i have literally thousands of magazines dating back to the 20s up until now. From what i understand we can post full articles no matter how long and if we name the original author and the magazine name it breaks no copyright laws.

Its hard to see why they would give Mundine a chance when you consider that in the 2 years prior to the fight being signed Monzon had faced and beat Napoles, Bouttier, Griffiths, Brisco and Bogs with a tune up thrown in before Griffith. In comparison Mundine had the loss to Brisco and wins over Griffith, Aguilar and Moyer with lots of very good fighters in between.

I dont see why anyone would have had Mundine as having a good chance of beating Monzon but i do think now Mundine i massively under rated at Middleweight, not only did he fight the big names but he beat a lot of very good contenders. I think had he retired at the end of 1980 and avoided those 5 losses in the twilight of his career he would be looked at more favorably by todays fans.

Emile Griffith was quoted as picking Mundine to win.

Beyond that, here is a quote from an Aussie newspaper:

"Word reached here yesterday that New York bookmakers were offering as much as 3-1 about Mundine's prospects - with few interested clients."

Mundine beat Griffith less than a year earlier, so Griffith knew first-hand what Mundine had to offer.

Guys, I can assure you this is semi-correct. Mundine was the talk of 160 back in '73-'74. Ring Magazine was practically running out the red carpet for his coronation. I still remember one article in particular head-lined, "Continental experts see Mundine replacing Monzon." And, indeed, Monzon appeared to be ducking him. Taking on re-treads like Griffith and Bouttier when an outstanding challenger was staring you down. Now the reason I say this is semi-correct is because all this was said pre-Briscoe. After the Briscoe fight he was called chinny and i think he was even decked by Nate Collins in one of his fights right after Briscoe. Suddenly monzon agrees to fight him, but makes it for Argentina instead of Paris where they were both very popular and could have made a bucket-load of money. So, it was obviously nagging at the back of Monzon or his manager's mind about mundine.

For some reason, the boxing press was stupid as hell about predicting any of the middleweights of that time to beat Monzon. They were as clueless as hell, like anybody else who underrates Monzon. He was the greatest Middleweight champion of all time....period.

That is how I remember it too. Before being ko'd by Briscoe, Mundine was the #1 contender and The Ring was kind of insinuating that Monzon was ducking him a little bit. I didn't believe that, but Carlos certainly took his time in giving Tony a title shot

You guys have to remember that the ring regularly gave lip service to international fighters who didnt necessarily deserve it in order to sell issues abroad. This wasnt as bad during the seventies as it had been in the 1950s and 1960s but it was still a practice. Id be surprised though if they or anyone else genuinely gave Mundine a chance against Monzon after Mundines showing against Briscoe. Mundine's athleticism was better suited to beating a straight forward slugger like Briscoe than an awkward guy who utilized his range and jab. It may be monday morning quarterbacking on my part but I just cant see how anyone could have favored Mundine. He quit cold against Briscoe the minute he started getting tagged and would have been expected to take a lot more leather from Monzon on his way in than he would have against Briscoe. That fight should have been a no brainer.

Wasn't napoles favored against Monzon as well? I'd like to think Valdez was too. That's some Joe Brown shit right there.
