MANILA -- The highly anticipated showdown between 4-division champion Nonito Donaire Jr and Mexican star Jorge Arce is a go in Mexico City on Dec. 15, 2012. The deal will be finalized by Top Rank President Bob Arum on Monday. Donaire, who is currently in Manila to sit as one of the TV panelists for this evening's world championship battle between AJ Banal of the Philippines and Punglulang Sor Singyu of Thailand, had just successfully defended his WBO superbantam belt last week against long-time champion Toshiaki Nishioka of Japan in Carson, CA. The Mexican slugger Arce, according to reports, was not impressed by Donaire's performance and was quoted as saying he has the key to beat the speedster Donaire. More to come... (With reports from Ronnie Nathanielsz and Dong Secuya)

So obvious. What a shit fight though, absolute mismatch of epic proportions. Yeah, it'll have hype, but only one man is winning, and it's not gonna be close. Don't see how this is a good fight.

Frankly, I'm happy for the activity level that he's going again before the year is up. I don't really see the problem with the fight with Arce. This man only vacated the exact same title Donaire has, this very year we're talking about. Does he need to fight in exclusively perceived toss-up matches from now on? Can't he just fight a solid, championship-level name who wants to have a go, regardless of the fact that he used to be much more than solid, while Mares/Moreno clear up their position soon? This is two months away. He could just as soon fight nobody else this year after winning three regarded titles in a row in this same year, already. Arce should be a nice bit of action. Also, Arce is not a stranger to an upset and Donaire isn't SNV-level invincible. Call me crazy, but I'd rather fighters just fight. A good fighter versus an elite fighter four times a year is better to me than an elite fighter going on year-long vacations and building up 15-month PPV fights that may or may not be any better than any "ordinary" fight.

Unified junior featherweight champion Nonito Donaire is turning down a potential Dec. 15 fight with Jorge Arce - based on the current terms being offered. According to a reliable source within Team Donaire, the 122-pound king said "the deal was not sufficient for him to sacrifice fighting in the opponent's territory" of Mexico City.

Following his ninth-round technical knockout of Toshiaki Nishioka two Saturdays ago, Donaire and his promoter Top Rank were in talks to make his next fight with Arce.

"We are working on it," Top Rank CEO Bob Arum told BoxingScene.com Tuesday. "Hopefully we'll be able to work things out by Wednesday or Thursday."

However, it appears that those plans will be shelved for the time being. The source also said that "upon hearing the proposal, Nonito extended his vacation in the Philippines."

After his fighter's decision win over Jeffrey Mathebula in July, Donaire's manager Cameron Dunkin told the media that he was targeting Arce; ultimately, both sides could not come to an agreement.

Instead, Donaire took on Japan's Nishioka, considered by many to be the top fighter in the division before tasting the canvas twice against the Filipino star en route to a corner retirement.

Since ascending to junior featherweight earlier this year, Donaire has annexed the WBO, IBF, and Ring Magazine titles in addition to the WBC Diamond belt in his three fights at the 122-pound limit.

After a few days of uncertainty following disagreement over the big purse that Jorge" Travieso" Arce was demanding to fight WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire - the issue has been resolved and the fight will push through at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas on December 15.

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum told BoxingScene.com/Manila Standard that "it's a done deal."

Donaire was at special ringside when Mexico's Gamaliel Diaz upset defending WBC super featherweight champion Takahiro Aoh at the Tokyo International Forum in Japan over the weekend.

The WBC reported that Donaire was present to witness the surprising twelve round unanimous decision victory of Diaz.

The WBC described Donaire as "one of today's sensations in boxing" and has been closely associated with Japan as he regularly visits and spends time in that beautiful country.

BoxingScene/Manila Standard noted that when Donaire scored a 9th round TKO over Japanese southpaw Toshiaki Nishioka on October 13 at the Home Depot Center in Carson City, California - there were some Japanese friends and supporters who flew to watch Donaire's fight although many more arrived from all over Japan to support Nishioka.

Donaire's rousing win, in which he also dropped Nishioka in the 6th round with a perfectly-time uppercut, proudly displayed the WBC Diamond Belt he won at the Diaz-Aoh title fight.

Arum also confirmed that undefeated southpaw Mercito "No Mercy" Gesta (26-0-1, 14 KO's) would face IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez on the undercard of the fourth showdown between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on December 8.

Gesta's trainer Vince Parra said the fighter from Mandaue in Cebu is "ready to go" and that Gesta's father Anecito Gesta has been a great help in training the southpaw, motivating him and keeping him isolated.

Parra indicated they would move to the quiet of Big Bear on Thursday to also benefit from high altitude training for what he believes will be a tough fight because of the somewhat awkward style of Vazquez.

He said Gesta "is coming along great and is ready to pull the trigger and be taken off the leash."

There are things he does that suits Mercito very well. He is an unorthodox guy but Mercito isn't very orthodox himself, so we feel very comfortable. He is a champion and we respect him but Mercito is excited to get that belt."

Arce confident, feels that he will knock Donaire out

By Ernesto Castellanos, notifight.com

Former four division world champion Jorge Arce (61-6-2, 46KOs) is very confident that he can achieve a major upset by beating, and even knocking out, WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (30-1, 19KOs) on December 15th at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. HBO will televise the contest.

Arce admits "it is true, Donaire hits hard" - but he plans to "keep pressure on him and make him submit, and I am sure that I will knock him out."

The Mexican veteran realizes that the odds are stacked against him, but he doesn't care. In fact he actually prefers to be the underdog.

"I fight better, with more confidence and with more desire when I'm the underdog. And on this occasion it will be no different. And with [trainer Nacho Beristain] in my corner, I will be even more confident because it is the best corner that I can possibly have," Arce said.
