***The Official Chauncy "Boxing Panda" Welliver Express***

All Aboard! Choo Choo!! Let's get behind this rather unusual yet charming character.

Record:

53(20)-5-5

World Ranking:

WBC #5
WBO #9

Next fight:

Thursday June 28th 2012

Chauncy Welliver vs Sherman Williams in Macau, China.

Welliver is a currently the WBO Asian Pacific Champ, WBC Continental Americas Champ, WBC Asian Champ and NZ Champ. He is a busy, successful fighter with an 18 fight winning streak collected in less than three years. He most recent defeat (against his most high profile) opponent was against Odlanier Solis in 2008, where he lost via 9th round TKO. He came in at a career high 282lbs after taking the fight on 10 days notice. Welliver received much criticism after this and is now fighting at around 240lbs.

Williams is coming off a near 18 month layoff, following his No Contest against Evander Holyfield in early 2011. His ring absence was not of his own volition but rather opponents, in particular British fighters wanted no part of him:

"I tried to fight the British heavyweights - Haye, Chisora or Fury - but those guys just like to talk about how good they are. They aren't interested in fighting a tough guy like me."

Having moved to Hong Kong last summer, I've now gone 11 months without seeing any live boxing (there has been one pretty low key card, which I avoided but Ricky Hatton was there). At the end of June that will change when I go to Macau (one hour ferry ride) to see Chauncy Welliver v Sherman Williams.

I googled the fight but couldn't find anything at all on tickets or even the venue. All I good find was the date and 'country'.

So I messaged Welliver on facebook and he replied immediately. He's actually a really sound guy but he didn't understand what was going on in the press conf so couldn't tell me anything about venue/tickets.

In the end, after a bit crack he offered me a couple of free tickets.

He's a sound bloke.

I always hear stories like this about Welliver. He's got no ego at all, just a down to earth guy who's got time for anyone. VERY decent he offered you some free tickets!

I think he was a bit embarassed at not knowing where it was/how to get tickets TBH!

How do you edit the title?

He does seem like a really nice guy but I wish he'd fight someone with a pulse. Doesn't have to someone good, even, just someone not quite as shit as the stiffs he's been beating.

Well Williams is theoretically a step up from Bert Cooper and Mensah. So its a start.

His camp had received an offer from Seth Mitchell for a fight but then choose someone else and SM got injured.

He's #5 in WBC now. He should beat Williams. He's got this high ranking, seemingly by being very active and winning all of the Asia/Oceania trinkets. Its not a bad model to follow. He'll be in the mix for a shot at the vacant title if Vitali retires after Charr.

Spoke to him on ESB and couldn't agree more with him being a proper decent bloke, he has a good understanding of the game aswell. He ensured that the Mitchell fight was as good as signed and even went on to breakdown his gameplan on how he would fight him on the inside, right on his chest giving Seth no room to use his power.

I'm not that surprised of the outcome.
Holy took the backdoor against Sherman in his last bout, knowing he wouldn't last much longer. And Chauncy never faired well against top level opposition.

I like Welliver though, and I hope he can bounce back from this setback.
