Peterson: I'll Fight at 140 or 147; Is Zab Judah Next?

Posted by: David P. Greisman on 5/19/2013 .

Three months ago, after he'd defeated Kendall Holt, Lamont Peterson spoke of the effort it takes to make junior welterweight. His bout this past Saturday against Lucas Matthysse came at a contracted weight of 141 pounds, which is what Peterson weighed on the dot.

Despite his stoppage loss to Matthysse, and despite his past comments, Peterson says he can still fight at 140, though he's also open to going up to 147 for a fight.

"I think I'm kind of stuck between the two right now," Peterson said at the post-fight press conference. "If any opponent comes at welterweight, I'll probably jump at it, but I still feel as if I can make 140. I didn't struggle. I felt good going into the fight, but things happen."

It's possible that his next foe could be Zab Judah, who recently lost a competitive bout with Danny Garcia.

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer mentioned the potential pairing during the press conference.

"When you put these fights together at that level [of the best fighting the best], there is no loser. I still want to see Peterson," Schaefer said. "I can see, if we go to Washington, if we put Peterson in against Zab Judah. Why not?"

The bout could be on Sept. 7 as the co-feature to Danny Garcia vs. Lucas Matthysse, according to what Schaefer told Dan Rafael of ESPN.com.

Peterson welcomed the prospect of fighting again in his hometown, as he did for his wins over Amir Khan in 2011 and over Holt earlier this year.

"Of course it'll be a great feeling to fight at home again," Peterson said. "I wanted this fight [against Matthysse] to be at home, but you got to be fair. You can't have all home fights."

Wouldn't be surprised if GBP throws Quillen in the mix also and make this card a triple header. :bbb
