Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, has agreed to terms on a fight between newly minted IBF welterweight champ Randall Bailey and Devon Alexander, to headline a Showtime card on Sept. 8, though no venue has been determined, Schaefer told BoxingScene.com on Monday. Bailey's promoter, Lou DiBella mentioned the bout was in the works over the weekend.

Bailey, 37, decked Mike Jones twice in their June 9 fight, finishing him off with a wicked uppercut in the 11th round of a scheduled 12-rounder for the vacant IBF title. Bailey had waited by his own account two years for an opportunity to challenge for the title as the IBF mandatory.

Now, he gets a chance to face a former junior welterweight champion in Alexander in yet another victory lap for this fight veteran many wrote off after he was stopped by Juan Urango in 2009. For his part, Alexander has won two straight over top opposition since dropping a bout to Tim Bradley last year, beating Marcos Maidana and squeaking by Lucas Matthysse in February. Alexander will be rising to welterweight to challenge Bailey after campaigning for most of his career at 140.

"We have agreed on the terms and it's going to be a terrific fight," Schaefer told BoxingScene.com. "You always have a good fight when it involves Randall Bailey. He's one veteran you can't turn your back on, and it's a great opportunity for Devon."

You know I think Bailey could do him. Alexander was hurt against Matthysse, bullied by Bradley and (apparently) beaten by Kotelnik. He'll be shit scared of Bailey's dig though.

Alexander annoys me with his grunting and inaccuracy, I hope Bailey catches him.

Alexander should take this comfortably. He actually looked rather good against Maidana, and should have the ability to outbox bailey all night. I thought Alexander - Paulie M was a done deal tho.

I'm not a big fan of Devon but I'd expect him to win here.

Bailey isn't as good as Bradley, Matthysse or Kotelnik for me, he's just a puncher.... who at this level relies on the opponent putting themselves in harms way to win fights.

Jones should have defeated him comfortably but choked and got knocked out.

Alexander looked good last time out, I think WW suits him and think he'd take this. Pleased to see some ambitious matchmaking on both sides, though, it makes a change - there were softer options for both of them that would have kept the career momentum without as much risk of picking up another loss. Good fight.

@Vano-irons

Really? I thought Paulie was reluctant to take the fight as he wanted a homecoming - or at least a fight in the East Coast - whereas GBP wanted him to go to St. Louis to fight Alexander.

I like Alexander in this one. I think the move up in weight will be good for him, though I'm not convinced he's with the trainer that can bring out the best in him. I can see him beating Bailey and Paulie M, but still think he'd come unstuck against the guys in the upper half of the top ten at welterweight.

Alexander just needs to follow the Maidana fight plan for this one keep his concentration and he will win it no problem. What is frustrating is it could make Kell Brooks march to a world title all that longer.

His march? If he beats Carson Jones he's in a title eliminator, but I wouldn't take it for granted that he'd beat any of the current crop of 147lbs champions to be honest. I can see why Matchroom would be interested in having him fight Bailey or Paulie, but I'd fancy Alexander to beat him.

I would like to point out I dont think that Kell is as good as some people make him out to be. I just am now eager for him to be in a decent title fight against one of the ABC beltholders.

@wrimc That's fair enough. Didn't mean to jump down your throat - not like that you sick fucks - but as you said there's a lot of hyperbole attached to him just now.
