You got a link to that article? Thanks for posting Gas :good, It wasn't as bad as i feared he acquitted himself well enough the other guy was right hand happy and extremely aggressive with it. Terrible match making for a guy who wanted to edge back into things though. Although maybe it was good match making to show him he's not got it anymore. Sink or Swim stuff. In hindsight Joppy would of been better which says it all about both men's decline.
I do wonder if Richard saw Barker and Macklin's displays against Martinez as well as Martinez rise to Middleweight throne and thought 'why not' just impression i got from a interview before Barker fight where he seemed to still feel Martinez wasn't all that. The moment i heard he was coming back i wasn't to happy. He seemed happy with his job etc and when i heard 'he's looking great' i knew it was bollocks you hear it so much it gets boring. He still had his skills no doubting that, you could see a few things he did were classy but wasn't sharp enough and had no defence to right hand and couldn't even react to it. Good stoppage BTW. Far to many right hands landed, If he circled to his own right he may of edged into bout a bit more. The other guy was no joke though  like a Lithuanian Mayorga.
I saw Buncey's article on it in the I the other day, gave it a right going over. Fair play to him it needed to be said.
Yeah even though it wasn't as bad as i feared it was still sad to see, guy would never of lived with him back in his prime. No disrespect to the kid he did a job and did it well. You got a link to that article?
It was pretty painful viewing that.
TBH your right he did take the right hands well but it was how many he was taking, he did get buzzed by a few and i think the corner panicked due to the circumstances (age/long lay off etc). I wouldn't want to see a round 2 hoping he could swing it around, they did the right thing but they did it a little to late. This should of been done in the gym IMHO. These comebacks have to be done properly and with realistic expectations.http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/...g-a-dream-turns-into-a-nightmare-7815090.html
I was at the show, was terrible to see it happen to such a good fighter and nice bloke. richard was hurt but i truly believed he would have recovered, i dont think the towel should have been thrown in richard wasnt even given a chance. i think he would have come out for 2nd round more aware and possibly even turned it around. but i am biased as i am a big williams fan, as you can tell from the video as the towels thrown i put my hands on top of my head im the bloke in red top, was totally gutted![]()
I'm not surprised at hearing that, the truth is Rooney saved Williams from a nasty KO.He's gonna fight on lads reading Wandsworth Borough News he's fuming with John Rooney for stopping fight said he 'has no faith in me or my abilities'. Sad really..
Im not surprised too be honest, and also gotta kinda agree with richard here, richard was steady, and covering up, ok he was on the ropes but the ref wasn't coming close to stopping it and richard is a experience fighter. if he does have another fight get it in a proper boxing venue and not connected to spencer "Loud Mouth" Fearon. get James Cook or Brian Lawrence who are much better trainers/cornermen than rooney they also know richard better and if there is anything left in richard they will bring out the best in him. He's gonna fight on lads reading Wandsworth Borough News he's fuming with John Rooney for stopping fight said he 'has no faith in me or my abilities'. TBH i actually felt he looked quite sharp for a 40 year old coming off a long layoff, a shocking piece of match making putting him with a dangerous brawler like that. It really was sink or swim but the problem was how many right hands he ate. Maybe if he allowed him to get back to corner and settle him down ask him to move anti clockwise to avoid the right hand and not give the brawler balance it would of handed Richard the win. I actually think Richard can beat that guy even now.Im not surprised too be honest, and also gotta kinda agree with richard here, richard was steady, and covering up, ok he was on the ropes but the ref wasn't coming close to stopping it and richard is a experience fighter. if he does have another fight get it in a proper boxing venue and not connected to spencer "Loud Mouth" Fearon. get James Cook or Brian Lawrence who are much better trainers/cornermen than rooney they also know richard better and if there is anything left in richard they will bring out the best in him.
