RICKY Burns, the WBO lightweight champion, has parted company with his long-time promoter Frank Warren, according to the Coatbridge boxer's manager, Alex Morrison.

The split comes in the wake of Warren rescheduling 29-year-old Burns' unification bout with IBF champion Miguel Vazquez, from 16 March to 20 April, due to the Mexican having contracted a vital infection, said to have been caused by food poisoning.

Burns, through no fault of his own, has twice seen his *efforts in the gym go to waste in the past four months, firstly when his title defence against Filipino Jose Ocampo was called off in December at short notice.

But Warren defended his decision after producing a medical report from Vazquez's doctor recommending that he spend ten days at home resting and hydrating as he was suffering from a high temperature, nausea and vomiting as well as palpitations. Vazquez apologised for the problems caused by the postponement, and added: "The infection I suffered in my stomach was very strong."

Warren said: "Now that Vazquez has issued a statement to confirm this, I hope this puts an end to the matter once and for all."

But Morrison has questioned the extent of Vazquez's illness after claiming that footage on YouTube shows the 26-year-old sparring when he was supposed to be laid up in bed.

Morrison said yesterday: "I regret it has come to this because I have known Frank for nearly 40 years, but it has to be for Ricky's sake. I felt we had to do something to stop Ricky stagnating. Two fights have been called off after he has trained hard for them and it was not even certain that the bout with Vazquez would have gone ahead on 20 April. In fact, I now doubt very much that fight was ever going to happen."

Crikey, surprised at this, thought that the Vasquez statement and a date next month would get him to stay put. They might now try to make the Broner fight direct (as presumably Burns leaving kills the Vasquez fight as there's no tv etc, the deal will have been done with Warren rather than with Burns direct). At which point Burns loses and is right in it. I think his career has been stagnating for so long it's an odd call to leave Warren now when they seem to have a unification fight on the hook.

Warren needs to buy Cleverly a 'plane ticket, then get him ringside for Cloud-Hopkins, go all out to get the winner.

Fwank's nearing the end as a relevant promoter it seems. Wouldn't be surprised to see Burns go with Golden Boy.

I reckon Vazquez probably signed for the fight and then started fucking Warren around. The show on the 20th could still have happened, wonder why Burns didn't wait for that and leave if it didn't materialise?

I get the feeling that show was never going to happen either.

If, and this is a totally imaginary scenario with little relevance to this topic, a fighter pulls out of a unification fight due to not being paid/thinking he'll be paid, the promoter then "rearranges" the date by a few weeks, will the fighter be any more willing to travel across the world to defend his title with the same worries?

The only thing that doesn't really add up is why Vazquez hasn't said anything properly about this. Then again, he could have been threatened with legal action to keep quiet or just be unsure of the whole situation himself.

We all saw the interview with Elie Seckbach a few weeks ago though where Vazquez says the fight hadn't officially been agreed yet.

Obviously Frank didn't want the card to be cancelled but it's still his fault and it looks like he could be seriously effected by it all with Groves and now Burns having had enough.

All just my opinion, of course.
