Ricky Burns postpones January title defence

Scotsman to take 'a wee rest' before next outing

WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns had decided against a defence of his belt on January 26 in Glasgow as the Coatbridge fighter weighs up his options ahead of a spring return to the ring.

The 29 year-old was left in the lurch by two opponents for his scheduled contest in December as Liam Walsh and Jose Ocampo were ruled out for separate reasons and Burns is now content to take stock before revealing his next move.

"He's just having a wee rest before his next fight, which should be at the end of February or beginning of March," Burns' manager Alex Morrison told BBC Scotland. "We hope it will be in Glasgow so that Ricky's fans can see him in action.

"We want to make sure that we get the right opponent for Ricky. He was very disappointed after his planned title defence last month was cancelled."

Burns has long been linked with a high-profile clash with WBC belt-holder Adrien Broner, although compatriot Gavin Rees is next up for the American on February 26 in Atlantic City and the 'Rickster' may conceivably have one eye on the winner.
