Scott Harrison vs. John Simpson Is On
By Tom Gray
The dress rehearsal is well and truly over for former two time world featherweight champion Scott Harrison who has signed to meet fellow countryman John Simpson at the Kelvin Hall in Glasgow on December 1st.
Harrison's name had been linked to former European champions John Murray and Kevin Mitchell but those match ups failed to materialise. A fight with Simpson arguably trumps both based on the Greenock star's red hot form and the potency of a local derby.
The bout will be contested within the lightweight classification so Simpson's Celtic super featherweight belt will not be on the line but that is of little consequence. The winner of this one moves on to bigger and better things.
Harrison, who was out of the ring for over six years, has had two warm up fights against undistinguished opposition in Gyorgy Mizsei Jr and Joe Elfidh. He stopped Mizsei, who offered little resistance, and outpointed Elfidh after decking him in the first round.
Simpson is a former two time British featherweight champion and has also held the Commonwealth crown. During Harrison's incarceration he fitted in thirteen professional outings, most of which came against top domestic talent with titles at stake.
This will be his first fight at 135lbs, after only two appearances at super featherweight, where he looked sensational in stopping both Paul Appleby and Dai Davies.
Several sources had expected Harrison to take another tune up bout in Glasgow but Simpson represents a formidable challenge and one senses this is make or break for the enigmatic ex-champ.
Harrison, thirty five years old, is 27-2-2 (15KO's) and the twenty nine year old Simpson is 24-9 (11KO's).
The show has been put together by Morrison Promotions and will also feature a wealth of Scottish talent in Michael Roberts, David Brophy, Stephen Simmons, Barry Connell and Ryan Collins.
