21 year old Josh Taylor, who recently boxed in the 2012 London Olympics, has announced via facebook that he is turning Semi Pro and joining the WSB.

"'Josh Taylor Boxing'
WSB HERE I COME !! Semi professional boxing world championship tournament. Cannot wait to get started. Goodbye headguard and vest for now."

Could be interesting, anyone know much about this semi-pro world?

Good luck to him, its a nice setup that allows fighters to dip their toes into the pro game without giving up their amateur eligibility. There's around a dozen good Irish fighters in it aswell. I think its a massively underrated tournament.

Watching some of the fights now. Good action in these to be honest.

I don't like the idea of it. I fear we may see a few amateurs going down this route, and it'll restrict the pro game IMO.

I also don't really get it. You are either an amateur boxer competing with fellow amateurs. Or you get paid in the pro ranks. A third option only confuses matters further for the public, and we all know how confusing this sport is already with all the weight classes and 'world' titles

I get what you're saying and it is confusing, but it has it's benefits IMO.

Like what?
Fighting top competition on the regular rather than turning pro and facing a bunch of stiffs on undercards before finally getting your shot. Going from Top level to Top level rather than top level to beating up journeymen for the first few years of your career, which i can imagine would be deflating. There is also the aspect of the team work as part of WSB is the team stages, that would appeal to a lot of fighters. Basically; teamwork, decent salary and fighting top opposition on the reg. Has a lot of appeal if the money is right.

:good I was genuinely asking rather than being sarcastic.

If I fighter turns pro after 2 years in this then, does their record go back to 0-0? Or does it carry over?

I'm not sure. In all honesty I'd expect it to restart, but they'd have the added pedigree of being WSB fighters and would be moved along quicker.

I wonder if this is open to cubans. I bet fighters like Rigondeaux would love to have been part of this.

tl;dr

Summary, please.
Basically, these fights count as pro fights on boxer's records. 1 guy was a really good prospect, turned pro after 2 years as a semi pro, and had his record read out as 3-6, rather than 1-0. That could fuck things up for promotors who want an unbeaten prospect (doesn't mean too much to me.) But its still not fair. If it isn't a pro fight, it shouldn't be on a pro record. But these guys are getting paid to fight. So really it has to be considered professional

While being slightly unable to believe that I am indulging this laziness, there is some dispute over whether contracts offered to WSB participants to entice them in. A few sticking points, principal among them being that they were apparently assured that their WSB record would not count towards their eventual pro record, yet when one guy was announced having won what he thought was his pro debut his record was read out as a career-prospects-changing 3-6, rather than the 1-0 he had expected. This reflected his WSB record.

Personally I think it's a horrible idea, the last thing boxing needs is to made more complicated and less accessible from a general public point of view.

Note to self: become less wordy, results will come more quickly.
