bear with me on this one.
this is taken from a book that was given to me that is full of newspaper reports on boxing from 1910-2010.
this article suggests that cockell had a good claim to win by DQ against marciano.
would he have got that if it happened today ?

sorry about the size of these images, but left big so it can be read..

{sorry for low quality images}

I think sometimes we look to much into new rulings, I mean refs are a lot more cautious and strict these days but back then they let the action go a bit longer, I don't think it was rare to see fighters hit someone with one leg still planted on the canvas. The Walcott KO had Walcott already floored if IIRC.

Marciano fought dirty, theres no doubt about that. He often did BUT thats not why he beat Cockell. Watch the fight. Marciano was moving forward, throwing and landing bombs while Cockell was shooting BBs. He was getting bulled around the ring and had no answer outside of his toughness. Cockell was just too small, too overweight, not strong enough, and couldnt hit hard enough to compete with Marciano. Cockell was naturally the smaller man but came in almost 20 pounds heavier than Marciano. I dont know if he would have been better served by coming in closer to Marcianos weight or not but he was never going to beat the Rock.

It's probably a good thing that Cockell didn't win on a technicality if he had to face Marciano again I think he would've been beaten to death. Refs those days were quite liberal, and let a lot of shit fly particularly in Championship fights. In any case he didn't exactly deserve to win, I don't think he won a single round and by this time had been knocked down several times already.

Wouldn't it have been some real shit if Cockell had won on dq over Rocky? The revenge Marciano would have exacted over Cockell would have been as brutal, conclusive and savage as Jone's revenge over Griffin...maybe even more so. OOOOOh, would Rocky have been pissed off and motivated to avenge himself!!

Maybe World L-HW Champion, because that's what he was, a L-HW in the early throws of a fat diseased body, which took his life at a young age of 54 years.

a lot was banked on Cockell early on but his inability to lose Fluid weight owing to the Glandular problem changed the course of his boxing pursuits.

If a dq had happened, Rocky might have killed Cockell in a rematch.
Ha. So,the referee was doing Cockell a favour ,by allowing Marciano to foul him repeatedly,without penalty? :smile

Points deduction and a minutes rest for Cockell would have been reasonable.Something similar to what happened after George Foreman hit Jose Roman,when he was on the deck.

Well, Schmeling won the heavyweight crown against Jack Sharkey on a foul.The foul being blow below the belt.

So it wasn't like there was no precedent ,for a fighter winning the heavyweight crown by DQ.

Yes, as a matter of fact....because the rematch would have been...well, could have been fatal for him possibly. If Rocky hadn't just knocked him out cold, he would have just destroyed him in an absolutely brutal beatdown. A dq call would have been a Phyrric victory for sure for Donnie boy.
