I wrote this article on Rigondeaux a few weeks after his fight with Kennedy a wee while back. http://www.saturdaynightboxing.com/2012/07/analysing-jackal-guillermo-rigondeaux.html I'm just going to add some notes to him from the fight tonight.

Improvements:

His right hand, in terms of offense, has improved dramatically since the fight with Kennedy. Before all he would do is flick the occasional jab and half hearted lead right hook, but it was largely just used as a defensive tool. Tonight he showed a very very nice jab and right hook, dropping a tough fighter in Marroquin with a right hook and largely controlling him with the jab at times. Combined with his unbelievable balance, footwork, feinting and eye fucking, i was impressed.

Problem:

Unfortunately I think that my only worry about Rigo may be correct. He was wobbled twice in this fight. Granted, Marroquin hits hard, but for someone who doesn't get hit at all, when he did get hit he was hurt at times. I am in the belief that Rigo is packing a suspect chin and a boxer with awkward power shots such as donaire could take advantage of it.

Another problem I noted with Rigo is something that all southpaws find trouble with. The right hand lands on him. For such a defensive fighter he was caught with the right hand more than I was expecting.

All in all I was very impressed with rigo. I would put more effort into this post but it's twenty past three. Hope you all get my general idea.

Nice post Arran, I like how he was opening up with as you said, a kind of right hook, and how he threatened by shaping up with his right shoulder. Also, it's class how he does it when he sees openings or holes in the other guys defense. Rigo is a countering machine.

Rigondeaux is brilliant. I don't know what else to say really. It looks like he can be hurt, but as a boxer, you'll struggle to find a handful of boxers who are in more control of a boxing match more so than he is. It's like when you watch the dog whisperer and the older dog, Daddy, he just walks in the room and puts all the other dogs in a passive mental state and they go all calm. That's like Rigo, it's like 'calm down son, I'm gunna box and you're gunna just play your position- the glorified sparring partner'. Only Ward and Mayweather are probably doing this in a better fashion right now. But Rigo is right up there in this regard. It's the perfect footwork and balance that enables him to be a great ring general, he's moving round the center of the ring without any excessive mobility and nobody punishes mistakes as well as him, if you as much as shape up to think about punching at a moment when Rigo has gained the initiative due to his constant feinting etc then you eat a left cross. What makes a Nonito fight interesting really is just that we know that Nonito can take you out at any moment with ridiculous explosiveness.

Marroquin has good solid power, yeah Rigo took a few shots, which he normally wouldn't, took them very well IMO.

Rigo delivers his shots with great accuracy and power......I cant see him getting beat, unless he beats himself.

Only thing I worry about is if he gets caught showboating again. I could see Donaires awkward power shots being a big problem, but I can also see Nonito getting spanked by Rigo. Good fight that should be made.

I think he is boxing within himself so far mate....There is no real challenge thus far on his pro record, what is it 11 bouts now......When there is a threat opposite El Chacal then watch him go!.....If he was taking people out in a round or so the big fights will become more harder to make, I think he is a smart fighter, a shrewd fighter should I say.

I think he will beat Donaire not with ease but convincingly.....Don't forget Donaire has not K.O'd anyone since he went up to SBW.
