It's not the 90's anymore though, so regardless of who wins (if it takes place) it wont mean anything. Suppose Roy has a major edge in activity even though he get's ruined in most fights.
Steve said on talksport he had a brain scan few year ago for other reason, and it came back all clear mate.did steve lose his license for a brain condition 15years ago??? thats why after roy stopped ducking him, the fight never got made???
Definetly ridiculous but can you really see it generating that much interest? Jones doesn't get huge PPV numbers and collins is realistically now a unheard of regardless of what he has done in the pastFight is ridiculous but they will get a lot of money for it if nothing else
Maybe not that much interest, but money yes. People in Dubai have supposedly offered quite a bit of money just to have the fight thereDefinetly ridiculous but can you really see it generating that much interest? Jones doesn't get huge PPV numbers and collins is realistically now a unheard of regardless of what he has done in the past
regardless of sanctioning the talk is of dubai so they're clearly looking down the non sanctioned route already they could even do a hay vs chisora esq shit governing bodyHate farces like these, they make boxing look like a joke to casuals and nothing positive ever comes of it. Cant understand why anyone would want to see a middle aged Collins, who has fought in16 years versus Jones, a fighter who has nothing left but refuses to give the sport up. Cant see the fight being sanctioned thankfully though.
the biggest fight out there for him is staying retired, i have no interest in seeing Jones in a ring again, let alone Collins. Jones was one of the greats, but that was a long time ago nowregardless of sanctioning the talk is of dubai so they're clearly looking down the non sanctioned route already they could even do a hay vs chisora esq shit governing body
clearly the balls in jones court but like i previously said if it's down to money surely there is bigger and more profitable fights out there for him and if it's purely about him saving face because he apparently ducked him years ago (i'm only 24 so well before my time) you only need to look at hos record and see who he's fought regardless of losing
as for the fight itself i wouldnt be surprised if it resembles jones vs lacey - jones being able to use his skills and remaining hand speed to look really good, with steve collins playing the lacey role of not having the timing or being able to pull the trigger to do anything back.I also have a different opinion to this on most boxing fans, to me I dont view this as some kind of big black mark on the sport or boxing sinking to a new low or whatever
I'm a fan of both fighters, I'm happy Roy Jones is fighting a fellow old washed up fella instead so its the end of him deluding himself into thinking he can mix competitively, and Steve Collins seems very sensible about the entire fight as a one off type thing. Whilst Jones has been sparked a few times he hasnt taken repeated absolute beatings, and was barely hit for most of his career so I dont see him fighting (especially this fight) as bad health wise as say Toney or Holyfield who both seem punch drunk and delusional which I think is a result of the amount of wars and sparring theyve done and how much punishment they took to the head for years and years and years.
On the side of things of 'this is the kind of thing that gives boxing a bad name' I disagree too, Danny Williams fighting gives boxing a bad name, all the fighters being left to go broke gives it a bad name, the blatant corruption gives it a bad name, the drugs scandals give it a bad name - etc.
This to me is sort of the boxing equivalent of the 'football masters' stuff or the zidane 11 vs ronaldo 11 charity matches, it'll be interesting viewing for fans of them as fighters to see what they can still do imo - and it doesnt really matter on a relevant boxing sporting level and shouldnt be treated as such and isnt really so whats the problem?
Its like when everybody made out as if Flintoff would have some kind of horrific effect on boxing and got angry at the attention given to it - of course celebrities doing new sports attracts attention it was the same for the england vs germany oldies thing with Boris Johnson getting all the attention, doesnt golf do some pros and celebs tournament, tennis has masters etc. - doesnt affect the sport, its a sideshow.
Obviously boxings different and youd have to go on a case by case basis, but to me this seems like two people who know what theyre doing, not Ali fighting at world level with parkinsons or punch drunks getting ko'd so they can keep their drug habit up or whatever.
