He just didn't gamble. That was an abysmal effort.

There was about 1 minute in the 5th where he did exactly what he needed to be doing the entire fight.

To be fair, his preparation was about as bad as you could get. But where was the drive to make a proper go of it?

The commentators kept using words like "brave" and "spirited" but, other than requisite amount needed to step into the ring at all, I saw none of that.

Just watched the fight and I feel the same way. I'm done with Purdy now to be honest, he turned up for a payday and that was it. I know he took the fight on short notice and he was totally up against it, but If he had put up a bit of an effort it could have led to some other stateside fights down the road which he could have made some good money from. As it was, he couldn't even make weight and then did nothing the whole fight. He certainly won't be getting invited back by any American broadcasters.

Agreed, anyone could have stood in there with there arms up and just taken punishment. Only thing really learnt from the fight if anything was that Devon Alexander doesn't pack a great lot of power, something which was known pretty much before the fight anyway.

If he'd opened up and started throwing he'd have got picked off and probably stopped. The speed differential was crazy in there. He probably thought he could have a go as well until he got in there.

He did everything he could, he was just way too limited which we already knew. He gave it everything and did well to absorb some of the shots he did. I don't think it's right to be disappointed in Purdy himself. Maybe in Alexander's team for taking the fight but then they just wanted to stay busy.

I didn't really expect a great deal from Purdy anyway - the fight played out pretty much as people expected. The gulf in class was evident and Purdy's gameplan didn't work and I'm not sure he would have had a great deal anyway in order to change. Barker was probably right pulling him out when he did.

Did he give it everything? All I saw was a guy plodding around not bothering to throw any punches. Alexander will have had sterner tests working the heavy bag.

He seemed more interested in making faces and talking bollocks to Alexander. That was just crass behaviour and heaped further embarrassment on the performance.

There's limitations and then there is THAT.

I think that's just how limited Purdy is though. Like @Ishy said if he would've opened up more he would've just got knocked out. He probably did go in aiming to throw more punches but it's a lot more difficult when there's someone who's much more skilled than you throwing power punches back.

Of course it is. There wasn't anything unique about this. I've seen people go in and perform that shit before. It happens.

Really though, Alexander was content to operate in a manner that should have suited Purdy to an extent. He was having such an easy time of it he stayed in range the entire fight ripping shots as it pleased him. Purdy just never asked any questions.

It feels harsh but I agree, he didn't fight. He went in there like a journeyman and was warned by Barker several times to show him something, anything. He didn't roll the dice at all. Fair play to him for sticking in there and taking shots and he's a braver man than me but it wasn't a great title challenge in terms of effort compared to what some people have given

I don't think that Purdy had much of a plan beyond hang in there and hope to catch Alexander with a big right. So he just stood there getting hurt while waiting for an opportunity that wasn't going to come. If that was Purdy fired up for a world title fight then I'm hoping the next few opportunities go to someone with more fire in their belly.

Agreed He was terrible, his punches seemed weak to, and the fact He kept talking schitt to Alexander made the effort even worse... Shows how big A jump from British to World level is...

Barker did say couple times He was gonna pull him out if He didnt start fighting, it was A hard first fight for Barker to Be thrown into, I think He done well...

Was annoying how the commentators kept going on how brave and whatever Purdy was, He was brave to step in the ring yeah all fighters are, especially at World level, but if He was extra brave He would of taken more chances and thrown more punches, your not brave because you let someone beat the schitt outta you and then tell to keep doing it, it makes you stupid if anything...
