Anybody here watch this fight? I gave it a watch the other day and scored it for Fernandez. Tricky fighter for sure, and Arguello really didn't look too sharp. In one of the early rounds he was constantly pawing with his jab and all around didn't look great at all.
Meanwhile, Fernandez was popping off combinations and scoring clean punches all night long. He controlled the ring very well, maneuvering himself efficiently. Of course, Alexis had his moments but he just never caught up to the gritty, sneaky Dominican boxer.

Fernandez was a stylistic nightmare for Arguello, who struggled to chop down movers over the shorter distance l.

Watch how Duran cut Vilomar off and battered him.

Alexis admittedly did better in the rematch. But JLR beat him by incorporating lateral movement into his game. He arguably never looked that complete ever again.

The underrtaed Fernandez fought his career best fight vs AA that night. He just did his thing and bamboozled Alexis. A triumph for negative boxing.

Movers always gave Arguello trouble and movement was the basis of Fernandez style, hes the kind of guy nobody likes to fight even Duran had a little trouble catching up to him and stopped him with a bodyshot if i'm not mistaken. Fernandez also fought Edwin Viruet one of the biggest spoilers of that era, i cant even imagine how a fight between those two went.

I was unaware that there were even people who disputed the result of that fight - pretty conclusive win for Fernandez, in my eyes.

I thought Fernandez applied himself well in the rematch, too. Not much running from him after Arguello knocked him down in the 4th round, but he still kept it competitive throughout the rest of the fight.

Ok I watched this but forgot about it

Had it 6-4 for Vilomar.

Amazing strategy but did something happen to Arguello's right hand?

He literally threw it 30 times. And when he did it would land a lot of the time, even if it was a slightly reaching shot. Even though Fernandez was circling away from it, it would land. He literally circled to Alexis' weaker jab the whole time, I was getting frustrated  But wow props to Fernandez he stuck to the plan and made it work.

Mamby-Viruet is surprisingly good to watch (my channel) so maybe Fernandez-Viruet was easy on the eye as well ;)

I agree.

One decision I take umbrage with it Arguello Vs Ramirez. JLR clearly won that IMO and put on his best all round display.

They're both early on in their careers too. It's only highlights, not the full fight. Viruet was undefeated I think and Mamby already had a journeyman's record :yep

Alexis had one weakness, which Fernandez exploited, slow feet.
