If a fighter tests positive for a fight what should the punishment be? Obviously he should be stripped of all titles he's earned but what else?

1 year ban?
2 year ban?
Life time ban?
Death?

Personally I'm in favour of a 1 year ban, getting their purse taken from them, being stripped of any titles and being subject to extra testing for the rest of their career. I feel if the punishment is out there as something fairly harsh it may discourage people from cheating.

A life ban is harsh. There are cases when boxers can take the wrong cough mixture and it can cause a positive test. You'd be basically saying that a person cannot earn a living from the job he is best at because of a slip up.

But they should be banned for sure, i'd say between 18 months to 2 years. A year ban is often pointless as fighters only fight 3 times a year now anyway.

Agreed largely. I'd say a 2 year ban though, probably a fairly large fine, and they should have to undergo the type of testing that Donaire does all year round. And obviously NC the fights they are proven or suspected of being juiced in.

It's a tough question - there are different forms of drugs, but we have to remember, in combat sports - death, mental damage and other direct physical injury can be received in a fight. Taking some form of PED that can provide an advantage to cause that damage to another combatant should probably result in at the least, life time ban, possibly worse - prison sentence.

But then, in other sports, it's not quite the same - is it fair for the same crime - taking a PED to gain an advantage should have different punishments depending on sports? It's a tough question, building stamina in tennis isn't going to really hurt the other player, realistically, but it could make differences to people's livelihoods and ability to earn money through performances and results.

It depends, you cant make fixed rules because every case is different, the drugs they use are different. Some people will be genuinely unaware they are cheating (coaches slip shit in drinks) some will know exactly what they are doing. It depends on the sport, combat sports should obviously hand out harsher punishments than say distance runners because peoples lives are in danger etc.

Personally I'm not so fussed about it, I think a large number of athletes nowadays have used something at some point to get ahead in sports. Sucks for those who are clean but its just the way it is.

It all depends on what they are caught using - if it can be proved they just took something innocently without knowledge then it should be less but for athletes purposely going out of their way to have an advantage I would be massively severe:

5 year ban
25% of wages accrued in the last year as a fine
All titles/trophies/championships etc stripped and full record turned to NC

issuing a year ban or daft 20k fines (depending on the sport) does nothing to stop people, it can be justified if they have made a name for themselves or made loads of money/won championships - give them a real punishment to think about and they might think twice.

To be honest I think this is the only way it'll stop. Someone's gonna have to be an example of.

Bang on with this - maybe 4 years like they do/did with Olympians but the rest is bang on. The problem is that there is no National Commission in the USA & neither is there a worldwide regulatory body which allows some fighter's to circumnavigate suspensions. Haye vs Chisora is prime example of a suspension being a joke, it still came off.

Performance enhancing drugs or diuretics should warrant a two year ban and total forfeiture of purse. Second offence a life ban. As for the "I didn't know I was taking anything illegal" defence well that doesn't cut it in a criminal case and I see no reason why it should be different in boxing.

Year ban and more stringent testing for the rest of their career. However its all impossible until we have a Worldwide Governing Body, as all that happens is a fight gets banned in one country then goes and gets licensed in another, this can't happen in nearly every other sport in the world, yet its so simple in boxing. Fuck even Big Larry could probably get licensed somewhere in Europe right now.

It's a real shame that quite a lot of people seem to have almost given up on the idea of fairness, as shown by @BUMPY KNUCKLES in post #6.
It makes the whole issue a bit of a fantasy, becasue there's no single body responsible. Since it it fantasy, I'm going for the full fantasy option. 1 year ban is not enough, it only rules out a few fights for the average fighter and doesn't consistute real punishment for me. 2 years seems reasonable, plus surrender of the purse and an NC on the record if they won the fight. Not sure about extending the NCs back through the previous fights, not a bad suggestion @Shaun Tate

I agree with the suggestion that a second offence should be harshly punished; lifetime ban.

I also think that the boxer should be treated no differently if they didn't know. If the testing is good enough, the testers should be able to differentiate between cough medicine and PEDs. Of course, I'm not doctor or chemist so I may be utterly wrong, but I'm operating in fantasy land. Make the testing accurate, reliable and regular and the rest would follow.

I have very little time for cheats, particularly in combat sports where a loss inflicted by a drug cheat could affect more than just hte outcome of one fight. You've got possible brain damage to consider, as well as the effects of a loss on a fighter's confidence.
