Archie Moore - I remember reading he was going to take him on instead of Maxim or if he beat Maxim, can't fully remember. probably a good thing it didn't happen.

A lot of good guys in and around his weight throughout his career though, not sure if any were ever mooted but along with Zale and Cerdan you had guys like Yarosz (Tommy), Fox, Holman Williams, Janiro etc. Hell I think even Charles was roughly the same weight range at one point.

Not that I'm saying he or they were ducking anyone or anything, just that their was lots of possibilities for quality fights to be made had they moved in the right direction at the same time.

Robinson definitely ducked Burley, I don't think it was anything to do with him being scared of him though, he fought LaMotta 6 times and Gavilan twice. The reason he ducked him is because they were not offering him what he saw as enough money to fight an opponent of such high quality.

if it happened in 46...what weight would robinson have been and what weight would burley have been ?

I don't think Robinson could have feasibly fought Charley. By 1950, Burley was right at the end of his career. The fight, for it to have been significant, would have needed to be in or around 46 as Doug says. At this point, Robinson has JUST become Welterweight champion. Two years later, Robinson was beating gavilan, and burley was in semi retirement

I've always been a strong believer that Burley was naturally a welterweight who was fighting at middleweight because of how he was ducked so badly at 147.

Also, my original post stands, because Burley called Robinson out so much and although Robinson fought other fighters who were larger than middleweight in 1946, he wouldn't fight Burley, and as I already asserted, it wasn't because he was scared of Burley, it was because of the politics surrounding the proposed fight. I'm on record on ESB time and time again saying that Robinson would have beaten him imo.

You can stick to a stance claiming on technical grounds that Robinson never ducked him because he was not obligated to fight him as they campaigned in different weight divisions at the time. But this only displays stubbornness imo, because anyone who knows the context of the situation knows that he ducked him.

He should've just fought the man and been done with it. Charley deserved that fight. Ray's record, level of opposition and choice of during his time as both Welterweight and Middleweight Champion is exceptional anyway.

Had Burley been one of the top contenders for either of Robinson's titles, I think the fight would've come to fruition. Not so say he was a true middleweight or anything of the sort, but he was campaigning and rated there, and had been for a few years before Ray even won the vacant WW crown against Bell and as stated, was about done by the time Robinson got a shot at the 160 crown (after going 120-1 FFS :patsch ). Had he been a clear-cut #1 like Gavilan was in 1948-49, much higher probability IMO.

bear with me here..could burley, around the time he beat the cocoa kid (floored him 3 times)...late 30's...have deservingly got a shot at henry armstrong for the welterweight title ?
yeah why not? It was pretty early for Burley but with wins over Zivic and Cocoa Kid then it wouldn't be absurd for him to get the shot at Armstrong

Unfortunately Zivic was Burley's manager when he could've got the shot...and we know who got the shot! ;)

yeah man, that's what happens when contenders in your division buy your fucking contract!
A contender you've already battered no less
