There's a thread in the current boxing forum that got me thinking about this.

I'm just gonna throw Smoking Joe into the mix from the start. That guy had some serious heart. It's unbelievable the way he kept getting back up against Foreman, I mean that's George Foreman! You're not supposed to get up! Then you have the Thrilla in Manilla where if it had been up to him he'd have seen the final bell.

I thought I'd ask here as I'm sure some of you have some inspirational tales of old timers and the like.

Who are your picks?

Think the question is too hard to answer, as there is literally hundreds of fighters you could choose. Theres always the usual suspects who get a mention, like Gatti, Frazier, Ali, Robinson, Duran, Leonard, and my personal favourite Holyfield.

Out of the lesser mentioned guys though, id give a mention to the likes of Bobby Chacon, Danny Lopez, Michael Carbajal, Matthew Saad Muhammad, Carmen Basilio, Ray Mercer and a shit load of others.

Imo probably the biggest display of heart ever was the Yvon Durelle-Archie Moore fight, where Moore came back from 4 knockdowns to stop his man. Id like to hear a few tales from some of the classic forum lads here on this subject to.

fuck off you wild man

Rocky Graziano, Jake LaMotta, Jess Willard, Beau Jack, fighters like that who kept going on in the face of brutality are all worthy mentions.

Also, a lot of people confuse heart with will to win. Larry Holmes had both, his will to win was more on display than his heart though imo, coming back from the brink to win against Shavers for example. Heart to me is more someone who simply went through hell and never said die, regardless of getting the win from it, which is why LaMotta is right up there.

I still remember the first time I read about that fight, in the 1999 version of the world boxing encyclopedia, it was a feature in the great fights section under the heading 'I walked the street of dreams'. Apparently that's what Moore said after the fight, that he felt like Durelle at one point blew the top of his head off and he walked the street of dreams.

You simply don't know what you're talking about where Boxing's concerned. Your vCash will testify to that.

I would add the 'Iron Man' Joe Grim. He fought an who's who including World Champions Jack Johnson, Bob Fitzsimmons, Joe Walcott, Joe Gans, Dixie Kid & Matty Matthews. He also fought a number of top contenders including Philadelphia Jack O'Brien, Jack Blackburn (Joe Louis' Trainer), Kid Carter & Peter Maher among others. Joe was basically a middleweight but would fight anyone & apparently called out Heavyweight Champion James J Jeffries. He was bounced of the canvas numerous times but still got up. Sailor Burke eventually sparked him out in 3 rounds in 1906.
