For those that saw the Jones/Lebedev fight last night, you'll know exactly why I ask this. Obviously it's a difficult situation because nobody likes it when fights are cut short like this but who really needs to take responsibility for situations like this?

The doctor ought to be giving the recommendation to the ref, who should then always follow that.

You could say the corner needs to take some responsibility but they aren't neutral enough. They know what is on the line for the guy. All that effort put in, the will to win, etc. They're also invested in the outcome too and would need to answer to promoters, managers and the fighter himself about why they cost him the fight.

I would say corner as they should be looking after the fighter but they won't want to pull him out really, so it should be down to referee's judgment with the doctor deciding yes or no

Ultimately the medical staff at ringside should be making those decisions but in a situation like last night where a Dr was never going to pull him out then the corner should pull the fighter out

My question about last night is I wonder how much of a cut/swelling around the eye it would have taken if the situation was reversed?

Lebedev is a warrior & is never going to quit but in reflection I wonder if he will be looking at his corner, who in a boxing context are the closest people to him & questioning whether they have hs career & health at heart because if they don't he needs to look elsewhere.

Also I think some responsibility lies with the promoter & I think in this country a promoter would step in & ask for the fight to be stopped not only out of compasion but because of the reputational affect a fighter being seriously injured on Prime time TV will have

To be fair, we don't know the kind of questions being asked in the corner. They could certainly have made the executive decision, but surely to god they were checking with Lebedev the whole time?

In any case, as you said, the question is why the referee was not consulting a doctor. You further hit the nail on the head in that said doctor may have felt unable to make the only obvious decision. If outside pressures are bad to that extent then this needs to be accounted for.

I agree with you we don't know what questions were being asked & Lebedev may have been responding perfectly coherently to them. However, only the corner can see how bad the swelling is & I think sometimes the decision has to be taken out of the fighters hands in his best interest by the lead second in the corner.
