After just looking through the James Buster Douglas thread it got me thinking, why didnt Tyson ever try to avenge that defeat?

Nowadays it would be written into the contract that the Champ would have a re match within so many days,

From what I gather they thought he would be a walk over so included no rematch clause. Douglas was also pissed off at King and co for getting the result suspended for four days due to the long count, causing him some grief. They offered him half a million for a rematch with Douglas laughed off and instead opted to fight number one contender Evander Holyfield. Unfortunately he'd lost his drive again and came in fat and got knocked out.

Douglas went into retirement afterwards and Tyson went to jail a few fights later.

Quite - the delay in granting two belts to Douglas after the Tyson win was caused by Don King quibbling, so Douglas said he wouldn't deal with King again. Took the Holyfiel fight, lost, retired (aside from his later comeback). So he and Tyson never overlapped in the right way again. Shame, really, but some people achieve their dream and then lose the fire. His mother had died just before the Tyson fight, he has said frequently that she inspired him on the night, he thought about his promise to her (to become champ) when he was down in the eighth, she made him get up. So once he had nailed that, he was never the same again.

The winner of Tyson/Douglas was contractually obliged to meet Holyfield on June 16th 1990. It was in part why DKP got so excited post Douglas, trying to get the result overturned. The irony of course being Holyfield/Douglas was put back and Tyson took the June date for his 'comeback' against Tillman.
