Wilfred Benitez is Fine, Recovering From Mild Stroke

Posted by: Jhonny Gonzalez on 12/29/2012

Former world boxing champion Wilfred "El Radar" Benitez is recovering from a mild stroke that he suffered at his home on Thursday, and he's expected to be discharged from Ashford Presbyterian Hospital in Puerto Rico on Monday. The former boxer, 54, suffers from chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a condition that prevents him from communicating effectively. Benitez lost "a bit" of mobility in his face and tests are being conducted to determine the long term effects of the stroke.

Bad news that he had a stroke, its a real pity what happened to Benitez, Leonard said he didn't even know who he was when he visited him and it wasn't until they watched the fight that brought back some memories. I think they said they turned it off before the last round and told him he had won as well just because they didn't want to upset him. Happens to so many boxers, its crazy.

Yeah really sad to see him the way he is now. Stroke or no stroke I wouldn't exactly say he's "fine". He has some kind of brain condition that has no cure if I remember rightly, awful stuff. One of my favourite fighters ever and the main man in one of my favourite moments too in his KO of Hope. Lands the right hand and is already smiling, basking in his own greatness before Hope hits the floor. What a guy.
