I had no idea about that James Butler thing at all. Never even heard of the guy or knew about Max Kellerman's brother. What the fuck? That sounds absolutely awful.

I don't agree with the Chavez/Taylor situation being one of the worst moments in boxing history at all.

Also that IBF situation really isn't much different to any of the other sanctioning bodies. They're all the same like that, most just keep it hidden a little better.

Surprised at the Richard Steele bit. I don't really have a feel for the context (i.e. whether or not he was a Don King patsy), but the whole Chavez/Taylor stoppage to me was controversial rather than a shameful episode. There is certainly two sides to the story unlike the others...

Regarding the IBF scandal is was detailed in the book Boxing Confidential by Jim Brady (link below). It also details the other parasitic sanctioning bodies, the IBC (mob) from the 50's, Don King, Sonny Liston & Tankers (fighters who threw fights). It's from 2002 so quite a while ago but for anyone who likes to read about the grubbier side of boxing it's a excellent read & well worth buying.

Some awful choices and not only the Richard Steele one. The Korea thing needs to be put into perspective, the Koreans felt they had been shafted 4 years earlier with several US fighters getting questionable decisions in their favour (wait until Rio and I think GB will feel the backlash of the decisions they got in London). No mention of Coggi v Gonzalez or Benny Paret's death, or more recently the scenes after Lazarte v Casimero (or even Minter v Hagler0.

Strange list. I wouldnt have Taylor-Chavez, the Korean amateur or the Mancini fight.

How about The Ring/ ABC TV/ Don King rankings rigging scandal in the 1970s? That was absolutely massive news at the time.

Agree Totally with this Post.

Their have been many dodgy decisions within boxing so that's nothing new. Taylor - Chavez was just unfortunate timing, Meldrick was out of it & didn't answer back + was never really the same afterwards. Regarding deaths, having the Mancini bout as no1 seems a bit over the top. Barry McGuigan, Max Baer, Emile Griffith, Sugar Ramos have killed fighters & other numerous deaths going back to the start of the sport do a disservice to the list. I would say the Griffith - Paret had more impact in that boxing was banished from the mainstream airwaves for a number of years.

Regarding the US/Ring Boxing Championships - check out this article - http://theboxingtribune.com/2011/03/revisiting-the-ring-magazine-scandal/

Also a good watch is this documentary - here's the first part

Don King Unauthorized

Also worth a look -

Don King: Only in America is a 1997 television film directed by John Herzfeld and written by Kario Salem (based on the book "Only in America: The Life and Crimes of Don King" by Jack Newfield). The film stars actor Ving Rhames as Don King and tells the story of King becoming a famous fight promoter and boxing manager.

Yeah for recent times that's been a real real bad one, would really have had boxing in the absolute prime sporting spotlight again and they fucked it all up by being greedy. I'd add johnny nelson playing with a pen to try and look intelligent as well.
Funny you should mention Johnny Nelson, he's responsible for the worst fight I have ever seen against Carlos Deleon in 1990. My brother still says Nelson owes him his money back as he actually went to see it live :yikes
