Had Haye won, would that victory over a much much bigger dominant heavyweight champ in their prime be the best single win by a British fighter? And if he gets another crack and somehow wins would that still have the same effect? or will the shine have been taken off it by the drubbing in the first fight? Im trying to think of single big wins by british fighters and struggling to think of many that would match it, anything Lennox Lewis did in a single victory match it? Holyfield/Vitali? Honeyghan over Curry? Maybe Turpin over Sugar Ray?

With everything that goes with David Haye, I don't think it would have been seen by many as the greatest win by a British boxer. A lot would've depended on the manner of victory, ie a knockout win would've gone down much better than had he nicked a points win like the Valuev fight.

It's too late now though. Even if he ever gets the rematch with Wlad and wins it, Haye losing the first fight would definitely have an impact on how the result would go down in history.

If Haye does ever beat Wlad though, it'll be a great achievement and one that I don't think will be fully appreciated by many boxing fans - many will label Klitschko as either being past it or never that good anyway, just the best of a "weak era".

Good question though :good

No chance. Bob Fitzsimmons knocking out Corbett was a far far better win than this would have been.

Also, I like Berg's win over Kid Chocolate as one of the finest wins by a British fighter abroad. Ted Lewis over Britton was damn fine also

i didnt count bob fitzsimmons as i find him hard to place as british, and like @GazOC points out, i also find it hard to rate the Lewis-Britton victory due to the fact it became a close series

ye thats what i think, he could get the rematch and win, but mention Haye vs Wlad in 10 years and people would think of the first fight such was it's build up and then the way it panned out. Also the longer it goes on like you say the more chance Wlad gets labelled as "shot" in retrospect, i think he'll beat Vitali next year and probably get another crack at Wlad, but a win wouldnt have the same effect as other British triumphs

Loads of better victories imo:

Spike Robson > George Dixon
Bob Fitzsimmons > James J Corbett
Randy Turpin > Sugar Ray Robinson
Freddie Welsh > Benny Leonard
Owen Moran > Battling Nelson
John H Stracey > Jose Napoles
kirkland Laing > Roberto Duran
Johnny Cuthbert > Panama Al Brown

just to name a few

I'm never sure exactly where to place Lewis-Britton Vano because of the sheer number of times they went at it!
I'm thinking mainly of the one when Lewis was forced to weigh in around the lightweight limit, while Jack could do as he pleased. Was a phenominal victory against a very accomplished fighter

But I take your point. The fought what, 20 odd times? Lewis was bound to win a few I suppose

Fitz is certainly a Brit. No ozzy is taking him away from us ;)

Shaun's list is very good. I can't believe I forgot Walsh - Leonard!
