I know the lower weights don't interest everyone, but this injustice towards Denver Cuello by the WBC is worth pointing out:

http://philboxing.com/news/story-79006.html

Filipino boxer Denver Cuello, who is ranked No. 1 contender in the 105-lb. division by the World Boxing Council (WBC) for the last two years, has engaged the services of legal experts to sue WBC President Jose Sulaiman and the WBC Board of Governors for their breach of a written commitment and agreement for Cuello to be the mandatory challenger to Chinese champion Xiong Zhao Zhong.

Zhong, China's first world boxing champion who won the world title in Kunming City Nov. 24, is scheduled to fight a Mexican challenger in the US reportedly against a choice challenger from Mexico.

Cuello, 25, who has toppled the best in his division, was earlier supposed to fight the Number 2 contender for the WBC miniflyweight title after Japanese champion Kazuto Ioka vacated the title to campaign in the lightflyweight division.

But according to his manager Aljo Jaro, he and Cuello agreed to step aside after Sulaiman personally appealed to them to give Zhong a chance to fight for the world championship to make a breakthrough for boxing in China.

Zhong was not even rated in the miniflyweight division but was ranked No. 8 in the junior flyweight division while his opponent Javier Martinez was rated No. 7 in the 105-lb. division.

"We agreed to step aside because of the verbal and written commitments made by President Sulaiman and the WBC Board of Governors that Denver will be the mandatory challenger to the winner of the China championship bout," Jaro said.

In deciding to ignore the mandatory title fight for Cuello, Sulaiman blamed Jaro and Cuello for not being present during the WBC Board of Governors mandatory fight meeting in Cancun saying he could not represent Jaro or Cuello in the fight.

Jaro, however, said that while he was in Cancun during the meeting, he felt no need to discuss the mandatory fight because it was already committed to them verbally and through email messages by Sulaiman himself.

"In fact, when I asked WBC Secretary General Mauricio Sulaiman if Denver could fight for the IBF world championship fight while waiting for the WBC mandatory defense, he told me to just wait for three months after the China fight because Cuello is the mandatory challenger," Jaro.

Jaro said Cuello passed off a lot of opportunities to fight under other boxing organizations just to show his loyalty to the WBC.

"Is this what I get for waiting and for agreeing to step aside? This is a great injustice to me," Cuello told his manager, Aljo Jaro.

Jaro said he tried to convince Cuello to give him a chance to reason with the WBC but that the boxer said he has decided to take legal action with the help of an uncle who is a lawyer based in the United States.

The legal action could either be initiated in the Philippines or in the United States where the managers of Zhong have allegedly entered into an agreement with Promoter Gary Shaw to promote his first title defense against Mexico's Juan Hernandez, who is also a knockout victim of Cuello.

Well-known Filipino lawyer Israelito Torreon, who is the Governor of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines for Mindanao has volunteered to handle the case should it be filed in the Philippines.

"This is going to be an interesting case and we would like to see Mr. Sulaiman and the WBC Board of Governors in the sala of Philippine judges," Torreon, who filed the historic suit against the MOA-AD in 2008 against President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo said.

Madness. Not all that surprised, I'm sure the WBC are eager to see what they can get out of China.

I'm a big fan of Cuello, seems like forever we've been waiting for him to get a crack at one of the top dudes at the weight. Well, since he beat Rachaman. Same thing. Might not be worth an awful lot considering the state of the division but he may well be the best strawweight around at the moment, hard to tell seeing as he hasn't faced anyone too great, but he certainly looks quality. Depends on if Joyi can recover from messing up against Rodriguez too, I guess.

Complete sham, the fact that the WBC are paying step aside money so they can pick who fights who despite them not working their way up the rankings is ridiculous - sham of a company, sham of a man, I really hope they go bankrupt in the future

That's worse than olusegun which I thought was bad. By reading the article it seems he's got a good case to sue.

They'll prob settle if it goes to court. Works in most cases IMO, if you take a claim you'll prob get something

World Boxing Council president Don Jose Sulaiman is trying his best to ensure that minimumweight mandatory challenger Denver Cuello gets a step-aside fee for having had to make way for Chinese champion Xiong Zhao Zhong's voluntary defense which was approved by the WBC board of governors at its convention in Cancun last December.

Sulaiman told BoxingScene.com/Manila Standard that Zhong had signed a contract with American promoter Gary Shaw and will be featured in a fight card in Las Vegas, Nevada against a still unnamed opponent.

Sulaiman told us, "I am trying to have Denver Cuello paid a step-aside fee and I also want them to feature Denver (Cuello) in the same card."

Sulaiman said he had already told the promoters he wants a step aside fee for Cuello who received $25,000 the first time he stepped aside as mandatory challenger and allowed Zhong to fight Javier Martinez Resendiz for the vacant world title in Kunming, China with Zhong winning a unanimous twelve round decision.

Efforts to get Cuello and Sonny Boy Jaro who are both promoted and trained by well-known former boxer Aljoe Jaro on the Top Rank card in Macau on April 6 fizzled out after Top Rank promoter Bob Arum said his card was full with nine fights including the pro debut of two-time Olympic gold medalist Zou Shiming of China and the flyweight title fight between WBO/WBA champion Brian Viloria who will defend his title against Mexico's Juan Francisco Estrada.

Estrada is the same fighter who gave undefeated Nicaraguan Roman "Chocalatito" Gonzalez a fierce battle before dropping a unanimous points decision when they clashed at the Los Angeles Sports Arena last November 17 on the same card where Viloria scored a spectacular 10th round TKO over WBA champion Hernan "Tyson" Marquez.

Also seeing action on the card are the promising Penalosa brothers, undefeated Dodie Boy Penalosa Jr and younger brother Dave Penalosa , both sons of the former two division world champion Dodie Boy Penalosa.

Nowt surprises me about this bandit! The Roy Jones debacle shows you what they are like.

Although he was a notable champion, Rocchigiani's most significant achievement was his victory in a lawsuit in 1998 against the WBC, in which he was awarded a $31 million judgment for damages over the loss of his light heavyweight title. The court ruling also retroactively declared him champion from when he beat Nunn until his rematch defeat to Michalczewski. When the WBC announced its intentions to dissolve, he settled for an undisclosed sum.
Rocchigiani should have bankrupt them!

Cuello should demand his chance, end of.

Zhong-Cuello 105-pound title fight set for June 28 in Dubai

by Ryan Songalia

RIZAL, Philippines - WBC strawweight titleholder Xiong Zhao Zhong will make his long-awaited mandatory title defense against no. 1 contender Denver Cuello on June 28 in the United Arab Emirates city of Dubai, said Cuello's manager Aljoe Jaro. Jaro tells RingTV.com that the contracts are signed but the official venue has yet to be decided upon. The fight is believed to be the first world title bout ever in the Middle Eastern city.

Cuello (33-4-6, 21 knockouts) of Cabatuan, Iloilo, Philippines has been on the sidelines waiting for his title opportunity since knocking out Mexican Ganigan Lopez last May in a final elimination bout. Cuello then became the mandatory challenger for Japan's Kazuto Ioka, who held the title at the time. Instead, Ioka faced countryman Akira Yaegashi in a unification bout in June before moving up to 108 pounds and vacating.

Instead of placing Cuello in against the next available contender to fill the vacancy, WBC president Jose Sulaiman requested that Cuello step aside to allow Zhong, who was rated by the WBC at 108 pounds but not at 105, fight Mexican journeyman Javier Martinez Resendiz last November in his home country of China.

Cuello agreed to step aside for a fee of $25,000 USD, while Zhong defeated Martinez by unanimous decision to become China's first professional world titleholder.

There had been talks of Zhong making a voluntary defense against an unknown Panamanian named Carlos Ortega, who held a mediocre record of 8-2 (4 KOs), before Jaro forced the mandatory fight by allegedly threatening to sue the WBC.

"It has been a long time waiting for this opportunity but now the opportunity is already here," said Cuello, who is rated no. 1 by THE RING at strawweight. "I will try my very best to get the title to join the ranks of Philippine world champion boxers."

Zhong's manager Gang Liu did not return an email requesting comment from The Ring, but WBC president Jose Sulaiman confirmed several weeks ago that the two sides had been negotiating for that date.

Cuello, 26, has lost just once in his last 29 bouts, with the sole defeat being a controversial disqualification in Mexico after he struck Juan Hernandez when he was on the canvas following a third-round knockdown in a 2010 WBC elimination bout. Cuello was originally named the winner but the verdict was reversed a half hour later.

Zhong, 30, has won two straight since losing an eight-round decision to Shin Ono last April in Japan.

Cuello has begun light training at Jaro Boxing Gym in Angono, Rizal, Philippines as he works to reduce from his normal walk-around weight of 120 pounds to 112, at which point he will begin sparring early next month.

When asked what he'd do with his purse money from the title fight, Cuello said he'd fulfill his dream of buying his own car to avoid the nightmarish scenario that played out last year when he forgot his WBC silver title in a taxi cab. The belt was returned to him. Cuello said he plans to buy a Honda Civic.

Cuello, who was at ringside when Zhong won the title, says he has respect for Zhong for winning the title, but is expecting to walk out of Dubai with the belt.

"He's a good fighter because right now Zhong is a champion," said Cuello. "But comparing Zhong against Hernandez and the many Mexican boxers I've faced, the ability of Zhong is not the same of my opponents before. It's different. I will try my very best to get the titles from Zhong because that title is not for him. That title belongs to me."
Finally.

Because I'm a total bastard, can I just make a correction. Zhong isn't the first Chinese world champion, never will be and never was. He was also not the first "title holder".

He was just the first MALE one, the first ever was Gao Li Jun in March 2006!
*is a stickler for accuracy*
